THE STOCKTON FAMILY OF NEW JERSEY, DR. THOMAS COATES STOCKTON, 1911, Appendix "The Other Stocktons", p 234: "The Pensylvania and Virginia Stockton; ... It is not certain that all the Stockton included under this general heading are descended from one ancestor; but the records that have come to hand are given for what they may be worth, and the PROBABLILITIES are briefly stated in cases of doubt. (paraphrased) The record of the PA and VA Stocktons begins with Davis Stockton and Robert Stockton, who were b. about the same time, both settled in Lancaster Co., PA and among whose desc. a tradition of relationship survives. ...The "Virginia Magazine of Hist. & Bio.", states that Davis Stockton came from the north of Ireland; and from the fact that the family of Robert Stockton were Presb. and intermarried with a number of Scotch- Irish families, it seems PROBABLE that he also was Scotch-Irish, and that he and Davis Stockton were brothers. DR. T.C. STOCKTON, 1911; WILLS OF ROBERT AND ISABELLA 1747; "Robert and Isabel, were in Nottingham Twsp, Chester Co., PA as early as 1732, and his name appears in tax lists there until 1747. This place is at the extreme SW part of Chester co, adjoining the MD line, and was probably considered as being in MD before the Mason Dixon line. They removed in Sadsbury Twsp, Lancaster Co., PA. The relationship of this Robert to the branch of the family which settled in Goochland Co., VA has been much discussed, but never satisfactorily settled....estimate of Robert's birth..."Which strengthens the probablity that they were brothers. Painter, of Allegheny, PA for the records of Robert's descendants) CC NEILSON, 3703 MOSS BROOKE CT., FAIRFAX, VA 22031; research shows Robert taxed West Nottingham Twsp 1732-38, but by 1740 he was in Sadsbury Twsp. 1743 survey shows Robert STOCKDEN with 198 acres, Warrant 12d 2m, 1743, survey 26d, 6m, 1743, Patented Nov 19, 1743 to Warrantee A-12-32; near neighbors are William Boyd, Thomas Hayward, Philip Howell, Wm. Neely, 3 OCT 1766 Robert is also mentioned in other grants H-677 1756, H-708 1756, M-8 1762; N-194 1766, N-231 1766 Capt Richard Morgan had a daughter, Olive. In Richard's Will he left to "My daughter Olive, wife of John Stockton, 100 acres, Salisbury, Frederick Co., VA" His will was 6 DEC 1763, her brother Jacob is selling the land, by lots, in 1767 for her, also calls her Olive, wife of John Stogdon. WE ARE ASSUMING THIS ROBERT STOCKTON WAS JOHN STOCKTON'S FATHER; MAY NOT BE SO the only clues to Robert's birth are: he was in VA 1734 with Morgan and probably 18-21; he was NOT named guardian of his sister's children, most likely because he was traveling between PA and VA; he married a widow b. c1708 in about 1741, so he married later than usual. If Thomas b. 1709, Jane b c1711, and David about 1715, Robert was born abt 1713. A widow with 6 children was not likely to have a problem with a new husband a few years younger than she

Was He ill? made a Will before marriage and that is why wife is not named? His Will mentioned Samuel and Elizabeth Simons "that is bound to mee", they being the children of his sister Jane. His father made him a guardian along with his brother Thomas. David was received into membership of Sadsbury Meeting, Chester Co., PA in 10th month 1747. CLIFF NEILSON, 3703 MOSS BROOKE CT., FAIRFAX, VA 22031; places birth as 1707 based on him being co-executor of his father's 1747 Will. the apparent late marriage of David has been confusing, as well as his Will written the same year as the marriage. The only clues to his birth are: He must have been over 21 in 1747 to be guardian of his sisters children. His brother Thomas was born c1709; his brother George was newly wed and died in 1747; his brother Robert was in VA; his brother John was newly married in MD; for his birth to fit with known facts of his siblings, David must have been born c1715.
