New England Hist and Gen Records Vol 36 p. 227 Johnson Genealolgy and Poems by William Johnson (B7A39 p. 15) Thomas Johnson was a farmer, carpenter, surveyor, constable, Lieutenant, Church representative, and representative of the General Court. (The First three Generations of Holts in America (B13c7) p. 205 Mary Johnson daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth Short Holt was born in Newbury 6 Oct 1683. She was the first child of Nicholas to marry and hers was one of the first 10 marriages in Andover, Mass. Her daughter Mary was the first grandchild of Nicholas Holt and the first Johnson child born in Andover. Mary Holt married 5 July 1667, (by Simon Bradstreet) to thmas Johnson who at hte age of 4 came on the ship "James" in 1635 with his father, John Johnson, later known as "Haverhill John." Thomas Johnson, son-in-law of Nicholas Holt was a busu man, a farmer, carpenter, surveyor, constable, lieut, church member, and father of a large family. When Thomas Johnson was about 14 years old, a law was passed that all youth from 10 to 16 shall be instructed by one of the officers of the band or some other experienced soldier in the exercise of arms or small arms, half pikes, and bows and arrows. The Johnsons and their neighbor's boys met for practice. In 1674, Thomas was made sargeant of the militia and later lieut. He was elected constable. He was a surveyor from 1676 to 1696. While he was not among those summoned to appear in the witchcraft trials, it is an honor to him that his name, his son Thomas Jr. and Wife Mary appear on the petition for the release of the accused. Thomas and Mary H. Johnson lived on the road leading from Ipswich to Billericia. Thomas died in the flames when his house burned.

B7A39 15 and 16 About 1673, a Dr. Return Johnson, later of Medfield, Mass. came to Andover from Hampton, Hew Hampshire and married a niece, Mary Johnson of Andover. We hopeto sometime connect John of Ipswich and Andover with both the grandparents of Dr. Return, also with the parents of Robert of New Haven, COnn. and to discover where all the choldren of Hohn were born between 1635 and 1659, in which there is a great gap in history.
