       Gaines, James:  b. 1791 in Laurens district, S. C., was a son ofRichard Gaines, "the Minute Man" - so called in a "History of the GainesFamily".  He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and fought the Indiana inSouth Ga., and Fla.  He married Margaret Clore about 1812 and selling hisfarm in Laurens at a loss in the 30's, he with his family and slavesremoved to Georgia, working on rented lands near Adairsville on the oldHamilton-Fitten place.  He was one of the charter members of theOothcalooga Baptist church.  Later he bought land near Cassville and byhard work he left his children an estate; died Oct. 1856 at Adairsville.

She married James Gaines about 1812, who was born in theLaurens Dist., S.C., 1791, died at Adairsville, Ga., October, 1856.  Heserved in the War of 1812.  They were charter members of the OothcalogaBaptist Church at Adairsville, founded 1837.

       Reuben Gaines (son of James Gaines and wife Margaret Clore) was bornin Laurens Co., S.C., Aug. 4, 1815, died at Adairsville, Ga., Nov. 17,1899.  He settled near Adairsville, Ga., in 1837.  About 1856 he moved toAnderson Co., Texas, where he lived for about 15 years, then he movedback to Gordon Co., Ga.  He is buried in Oothcaloga cemetery.  He was afarmer and a deacon in the Baptist Church.

       Reuben, b. 1815 in Laurens district, went to school in thatdistrict, m. Elizabeth Walker in Jan. 1836 and moved near Adairsville andlived 19 years at the Tillman Leake place, then in 1856 he moved to Texasand during the Civil War served in the Texas state troops.  They returnedto Gordon county in 1871 and she died in 1886.  He m. Alice Sanders ofRome, and he died in 1899 and is buried in Oothcalooga.  Most of thechildren are identified with Texas in Navarro county.
