Orange (Albany) - 1st Sheriff - Ulster, NY - under Peter Stuyvesant, justice and collector of the grand excise. Lawyer - Honorable and just in Character - Episcopalian NOTES FROM BACK: 1. Age 17 - entered Chester (VT) Academy; 2. Later, pursued a course of study at Burr Collegiate Seminary, Manchester, VT 3. Chose Profession of Law, (under preceptership of Judge Washburn and Peter T. Washburn (of Ludlow, VT) 4. 1840 - moved to New York State - town of Broadalbin, Fulton Co. 5. Moved to Oppenheim (until 1850 - he practiced there) 6. In July 1845 - admitted to the bar - stayed in Oppenheim until 1850 7. Opened offfice in NY in 1850 - practiced there about 7 yrs. 8. In 1852 - he and family removed to Johnstown, NY - stayed there. 9.Formed several partnerships with other lawyers - Ended with Dudley, Dennison and Dudley - (James M. Dudley, James A. Dennison (his son-in-law) and Harwood Dudley (his son). In 1882 - Mr. Dennison was appointed deputy attorney general of State of NY and retired from the firm. 10. Mr. Dudley and son, Harwood, continued the partnership until James M. Dudley died. 11. He was a leader in his profession - Honorable and Just in character - learned and skillful 12. Had respect of Bar, clients - everyone 13. In public affairs - he took an active interest - appointed District Attorney by Governor Seymour 14. In 1866 - Chairman of Fulton County board of Supervisors 15. In 1871 - Candidate of Republican party for County Judge 16. In 1872-73 - served as member of Convention to revise State Constitution. 17. For many years - U.S. Commissioner 18. He believed in Public School System and gave freely of his time and influence - in the cause of education. 19. He was one of the trustees of the old Johnstown Academy, later merged into the Union Free Schoool. 20. In 1869 - was elected Pres. of Board of Education - Johnstown - held position until his death. 21. His religion - Episcopalian - member of St. John's Church - a trustee and Vestryman. 22. "His influence in Fulton County was always exerted for the welfare of people and never for selfish gain or advancement." 23. He was loyal to his friendships and true to his obligations as a citizen and neighbor.

Attended school at Johnstown academy until 1863; 2. 1863-64 was clerk in provant marshal's office at Schenectady; 3. 28 May 1864 - mustered into service as 2nd lieutenant, 1st Regiment N.Y. Light Artillery Served in fortifications about Wash. D.C. and was honorably discharged 23 Nov. 1864 4.1865-1866 - a student at Hobart College. 5. Aug 1866 - he entered U.S. Military Academy at West Point - graduated June 1870- Number 15 in a class of 53. 6. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to 2nd Regiment - U.S Artillery. 7. Oct 1875 - promoted to 1st Lieutenant. 8. Was Professor of military Science and Tactics - at University of Nebraska - 1876-1879 (also 1884-1888) 9. In Nebraska, appointed Colonel and aide to the Governor, John M. Thayer. 10. In 1881 - was on duty in Wash. D.C. - took part in inauguration Ceremomies of Pres. Garfield and also those at his death. 11. In 1882-83 - was aide to Major - General Henry J. Hunt, commanding the Dept. of the South, and was also acting judge advocate and actiong chief ordnance office of that office. 12. During these years, he studied law - graduated from Albany Lew School, L.L.B. 1875 - admitted to N.Y. bar - 1875. 13. Admitted to Nebraska Bar - Jan 1888. 14. Kept getting military promotions - retired as brigadier general, U.S.A. (1 Aug. 1901) 15. Author of "Military Law and the Procedure of Courts Martial; pub. 1907 16. Member of Episcopal Church - prominent in Masonic Order - both in the York and Scottish Rites (In Scotland Rites - he is 33rd degree - highest possible degree that is conferred in U.S. 17. In 1887 and 1888 - he was grand commander of Knights templar of Nebraska. Had many other important positions - in masonic order - 18. Belongs to many Historical Societies, Sons of American Revolution, etc.

He Obtained his early education in public schools and prepared for college at Johnstown Academy. 2. He prepared for college - so thoroughly and well - he was able to enter Sophomore class at Union College in 1872, graduated A.B. in 1875. 3. Wanted to become a Lawyer - He read and studied during summers before entering law school. 4. Entered Albany Law School and graduated L.L.B. in 1876 - admitted to N.Y. Bar - 17 May 1876. 5. 1 Jan 1877 - became one of firm of Dudley, Dennison and Dudley. 6. In 1882 - the firm narrowed to Father and Son only - Dennison had been appointed deputy attorney of NY State. 7. After his father died - he continued alone until 1 Sept. 1904 - then he admitted his nephew - Alfred Dudley Dennison, as partner. 8. Firm has always had high standing - they were lawyers and also law writers - "Literary Wooks." 9. His broad, enlightened mind covers a variety of interests. 10. Greatly interested in work of the Humane Society - Pres. of it. 11. Member of Presbyterian Church - serves as Deacon. 12. Served on Board of Education - 6 yrs. 13. 1908 - Became a trustee of Union University - his Alma Mater. 14. Became in the Masonic Order - thirty, second degree - Ancient and accepted Scottish Rite. 15. He is Past Master of St. Patrick's Lodge No. 4, Free and accepted Masons - belonged to severed groups. 16. He is a member of Johnstown Historical Society. 17. Member of the Empire State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. 18. His social club is the Colonial - of which he has been pres. 19. Politically - he is a Republican.
