NOTE:  
    1. Spent 15 yrs - VT Legislature - Helped get first school and first church - Loyal supporter of Pres. Madison. 
    2.  General Peter Dudley - In March 1800, with his young wife he went to Peru, VT. He purchased forest land and built a log cabin. In time, he built a large farm house and fields replaced forest. He became a prosperous farmer. General Dudley had - 15 grandsons - who were old enough to serve in
Civil War. (12 did serve) 7 of them as officers, 6 were wounded, 3 died in service.

NOTES ON BACK:  
    1. Possessed a strong and sturdy independence of character and was of the strictest integrity.
    2. Elected to VT legislature in 1810 - served by successive re-elections for 15 years.
    3. Between 1835-40 he was again elected for 2 or 3 yrs. in succession.
    4. He was liberal to all public improvements and enterprises.
    5. He was instrumental in getting the first school established and in having 1st house of worship erected.
    6. When military company was organized in Peru - he was elected its first captain. Then promoted to Colonel, and later brigadier-general of the Bennington County brigade.
    7. He served 1812-14, during 2nd war with Great Britain and was with his command in Plattsburgh compaign. He resigned from service in 1820.  He was a loyal supporter of Pres. Madison and advocated a vigorous
prosecution of the war.

NOTE: Wife is a great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Roeloff Swartwout, of
Ulster, NY - Born in Holland about 1634; came to New Netherlands 1655; settled
at Ft. Orange (Albany) - 1st Sheriff - Ulster, NY - under Peter Stuyvesant,
justice and collector of the grand excise. Lawyer - Honorable and just in
Character - Episcopalian

NOTES FROM BACK:  1. Age 17 - entered Chester (VT) Academy;
2. Later, pursued a course of study at Burr Collegiate Seminary, Manchester, VT
3. Chose Profession of Law, (under preceptership of Judge Washburn and Peter T.
Washburn (of Ludlow, VT)
4. 1840 - moved to New York State - town of Broadalbin, Fulton Co.
5. Moved to Oppenheim (until 1850 - he practiced there)
6. In July 1845 - admitted to the bar - stayed in Oppenheim until 1850
7. Opened offfice in NY in 1850 - practiced there about 7 yrs.
8. In 1852 - he and family removed to Johnstown, NY - stayed there.
9.Formed several partnerships with other lawyers - Ended with Dudley, Dennison
and Dudley - (James M. Dudley, James A. Dennison (his son-in-law) and Harwood
Dudley (his son). In 1882 - Mr. Dennison was appointed deputy attorney general
of State of NY and retired from the firm.
10. Mr. Dudley and son, Harwood, continued the partnership until James M. Dudley
died.
11. He was a leader in his profession - Honorable and Just in character -
learned and skillful
12. Had respect of Bar, clients - everyone
13. In public affairs - he took an active interest - appointed District
Attorney by Governor Seymour
14. In 1866 - Chairman of Fulton County board of Supervisors
15. In 1871 - Candidate of Republican party for County Judge
16. In 1872-73 - served as member of Convention to revise State Constitution.
17. For many years - U.S. Commissioner
18. He believed in Public School System and gave freely of his time and
influence - in the cause of education.
19. He was one of the trustees of the old Johnstown Academy, later merged into
the Union Free Schoool.
20. In  1869 - was elected Pres. of Board of Education - Johnstown - held
position until his death.
21. His religion - Episcopalian - member of St. John's Church - a trustee and
Vestryman.
22. "His influence in Fulton County was always exerted for the welfare of
people and never for selfish gain or advancement."
23. He was loyal to his friendships and true to his obligations as a citizen
and neighbor.

NOTES:
    1. Peter Dudley Jr. - Postmaster - Station Agent , Hotel Keeper -He had been a Democrat, but voted for Fremont in 1858, and lost his Post Office as a result.  He sold his Rutland property and returned to Manchester, VT where he purchased a farm, but later retired to the village.  He married three times (names unknown) had three sons (names unknown) in the Union Army two of hom died during the Civil War.
