ROAT dies as result of accidental injury. Skull fractured by falling Sweep haystacker Saturday
Dies at Bilings Monday.

Paul Roat, Sr., died Monday morning at the St Vincent's hospital in Billings from the effects of a skull fracture received in an accident with a haystacker Saturday afternoon. He regained consciousness shortly after the fatal mishap and retained awareness of persons and surroundings until the last.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon about one thirty at the Roat farm about three miles west of this city while Roat and his sons, Arthur and Celeste, were stacking hay. The elder man stepped under the raised sweep of the stacker to remove some hay, and as he was about to step out from under the sweep, he gave the rope a pull to lower it, unaware that the rope had become detached from the horses. Thus unchekced by the horses, the heavy sweep fell with a crash, striking Roat across the left shoulder and on the head. His skull was fractured and both arms were broken, the left badly splintered.

Arthur Roat jumped from the stack, raised the sweep and called for help. Dr. C. L. Koehn was summoned and after administering first aid and caring for the fractured limbs, he rushed the injured man to Red Lodge. Roat regained consciousness shortly and was taken to Billings on the afternoon train. His wife was at the bedside when he (died).
