Notes:
Mary died Tuesday. Successfully she undergoes an operation in March, only to fall victim to flu attack. Death came quietly and peaceably to Grandma just before midnight following an illness of several weeks during which she had been steadily losing strength. She underwent an operation on March 2 and had apparently recovered entirely from it, but her store of vitality was unable to cope with the intestinal flu with which she was later afflicted. Grandma had been a resident of Red Lodge for 30 years and for about 20 years had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Anton Columbus, where the body will lie in state tonight and tomorrow morning. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon from the Congregational Church with Rev. D. Ellis Evans officiating. R.G. Martin is directing the arrangements.
At the time of her death, Grandma was within 2 days of 78 years of age having been born May 10, 1850 in Germany. She was married in Germany to Simon Bertagnolli and they came to America in the early 80's taking up their abode in Illinois where Simon died a few years later. His widow was remarried in 1893 to Gabriel Feroglio and they came to Red Lodge to make their home. Mr. Ferolgio died in 1905.
Three daughters and a son by the first marriage survive: Mrs. Antone Columbus, Mrs. Mary Roat, Mrs. Batista Cima and Eugene Bertagnolli, all of Red Lodge and one daughter, Mrs. Alex Boggio of Luther by her second marriage also survives.
There are 28 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren living who with her children will be present at the funeral. 6 grandchildren have been selected to act as pallbearers: Paul Roat, Eugene Cima, Adolph Roat, Celeste Roat,Phillip Roat and James Cima. Interment will be made beside the grave of Mr. Feroglio.
In her long period of residence in Red Lodge Grandma had made scores of close friends and her death came as a distinct shock to the entire community.
       Taken from an obituary.

Family record: taken from Emma Columbus family Bible. Translation found in Grandma Bertagnolli's Bible

Bertagnolli History:
       SIMONE 1848 to 1850
CONSTANTINE Bertagnolli born October 7, 1865 in Austria. Died September 28, 1942. Married Maria Farinelli from the same place in Austria. Came to this country in 1884. First settled in Coal City, Illinois and came to Daphne, Alabama in 1898. The older children were born in Illinois. Two sisters listed below left Austra with him and they all came to Daphne together. They all raised families here and are buried in Daphne Catholic Cemetery. Angela Born January 9, 1860...died January 9, 1941 married John Predazzer and some children remain here. Theresa born june 29, 1862..died August 2, 1950..married Victor Lazzari..most children in Daphne. Other brothers..Joachim (the oldest) and Oliver settled in Joliet, Illinois. These three are believed to have come to this country two years earlier than Constantine. Theresa and Angela. Josephine, the youngest, lived here a short time and returned to Austria. Caroline and Catherine remained in Austria. It is not know hwere Simon finally settled, but some think it was in Montana. They came from the Tyrol Region of Austria..probably from the town of Treiste.
Joachim, Simone, Constantine, Alexander, Oliver, Theresa, Angela, Josephine, Caroline, Catherine.

Mary Rushard was born May 12, 1850. Her grandfather was Austrian Tyrol and was a cabinetmaker. She moved from Baden Baden in the early 1880's. Simon died in Illinois, but the year is not certain. Mary moved to Red Lodge in 1899. (Source: "Norstrom" history; father's name of Simon verifed in Emelia's death certificate and Bap and Emelia's marriage record).
So it appears that the Bertagnollis moved around a great deal in Switzerland and Germany, which appears consistent with the belief that Simon was an army officer. Based on information cited below, in July 1873 they lived in either Weil, Germany and/or Bern, Switzerland; in December, 1877 in Baden-Baden; in October 1879 in "Lohrush," Germany. In the early 1990'sa they moved to Michigan and then to Illinois, where son Eugene was born in 1883 and where Simon died. Daughter Mary married in Michigan in 1888. Mother Mary remarried Gabriel Feroglio and had another child, Theresa Amelia Feroglio, February 1, 1889 in either Coal City, Illinois or Red Lodge, the records conflict. It appears that Mary Rushard Bertognolli Feroglio, and her children, were all in Red Lodge by the end of 1899.
According to Alma Thomas, Simon was a Catholic and Mary was a Lutheran.

EMMA according to the Nordstrom history, married Anton "Tony" Columbus, who was born July 20, 1876 in Turin, Italy and died Setpember 29, 1969 in Red Lodge. He was six when he moved to Illinois (about 1882). His father, Frank Colombus, was a farmer who came to America in the early eighties. "They formerly traveled all through Italy. They did this for many generations in the northern part of Italy. Aton's father, grandfather, adn great-grandfather fought in the Garibaldy when they freed Rome." Anton worked in the cola mines in Carbonhill, Illinois until age 23. He married Emma on March 19, 1890 in Coal City, Illinois and they had two children, Clara and Dominic, before moving to Red Lodge, MT in 1899, where he worked as a coal miner.
RECALL taht Emma's mother, Mary, had already moved to Red Lodge by 1889. The 1910 census lists Anton, 22, weighmaster, adn Emma, of "Italy-Germany" descent, with the following children: Clara, 13, and Dominic, 11, born in Illinois, and Walter, 8, Laura, 6, and Catherine, 2, all born in Montana. Also living with them is "mother-in-law" MAry "Feralia" Feroglio, age 60, born in Germany, whose father was Italian and whose mother was German. They lived on North Haggin Ave. in Red Lodge. (It might be noted here that this North Haggin Ave. was in what was called the Little Italy area of red Lodge.)
ANTON'S obituary verifies that he was born in Turin, Italy July 20, 1876, and moved at age 6 to Coal City, Illinois and moved to Red Lodge "71 years ago" (about 1898). He died October 2, 1969, age 93. (Carbon County News obit.)
THEIR son, Dominic, died at age 20 in 1918, and his obituary says he was born in Coal City, Illinois on December 20, 1898 and brought to red Lodge by his parents at age six months. (Carbon County Journal obit., 6-5-1918)
