Originally the family came from Scotland and the original spelling is Cochrane. The family settled in Pendleton District, So Carolina. The settlement was colonized and embraced the present counties - Anderson, Oconee and Pickens - this information from Book 975.72, W2C FHL SLC. Birth and death records are from the family Bible of William Harrison Cockerham. Information from family records and IGI FHL # They settled in Madison Co. in 1840. Mary Harrison was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Harrison, verified by copy of deed of gift from Sabret Perkins to her grand daughters Mary Catherine, and Sabret Harrison (Anderson Co. S.C. deeds Vol 1-J pages 469-470). Mary Cockerham named her daughters Catherine and Sabret, further proof Mary was included in deed.
Family Records indicate Benjamin and Nancy were born in South Carolina. IGI records indicate that Benjamin and Nancy were born in Saint Clair, Alabama. Elisha Cockerham Bible records indicate that about 1800 the family moved to the Pendleton Dist. of South Carolina, and about 1818 the family began a movement through Alabama and ending in Madison Co., Miss. where both Elisha and his wife Mary died. Elizabeth Cockerham- LDS Ordinances Ref Batch #7819302 Sheet 92 Call #1126348 Hugh Ensley Stewart was a Licensed Baptist Preacher. They lived and farmed in the SouthWest part of Noxubee County, Mississippi. They had 7 children. In 1855 Elizabeth Cockerham Stewart married John Hardin of neighboring Kemper County. One son was born. After the Civil War there was mass migrations from Miss. to Texas, and reportedly because of lack of congeniality between John Hardin and the Stewart sons, Elizabeth sold her land, and the whole family moved to the area of Texas in which she died thirty years later. Four of the Stewart sons married Russells, many of whom had remained in Noxubee Co.
William Harrison- Some information from family records. LDS Ordinances documented Batch 7819403 sheet 52, Call #1126349 William married Mrs. Eliza Ann Walker, a widow with one small daughter living and one dead. About 1849 they moved to Union Co., Arkansas, where a sister, Harriet and her husband Lodewick Dobbs were living, as well as Loddy Dobbs, mother Catherine Cockerham Dobbs and her other children. Elisha being the eldest son in the vicinity was designated to complete the disposition of the estate of his mother, and was also made guardian of the minor children. He developed a stomach ailment and died while at a mineral springs resort in the vicinity called "Coopers Wells" He did not marry again and left no children by his marriage. (After the death of his mother there were 3 items of expense which were incurred quite often which were: a gallon of whiskey, a box of cigars, and calosel (sp). Thomas Jefferson Cockerham served in the Civil War then moved to Yazoo Co. Thomas was a farmer. Died of Pneumonia in Yazoo Co. Information from family history and FHL Family Records Mississippi Revolutionary Soldiers and FHL. Also from Littleton Belcher Richards Bible records Volume XVIII. Littleton B. Richards was a farmer, horseman, and had a water mill which he used for grinding, sawing lumber, and ginning cotton. Caroline lived almost ninety years. She is buried beside her husband in the Baptist cemetery in Mashulaville, Mississippi. Caroline Cockerham's story was told in the following obituary. It was writtenby George Russell, brother of her son-in-law 4 Feb 1927:...Caroline Cockerham was born in Noxubee Co., September 25, 1837 and was happily married to L. B. Richards March 22, 1855; gave her heart to God, accepted Christ as her Savior, joining New Zion Baptist Church in Choctaw Co. in 1856, having served her Master faithfully for more than seventy years. Her husband passed away Jan 13, 1898. They had ten children all of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Eight surviving are Mrs. C.P.Russell whith whom she made her home,(skipping some to get pertitent info only)She had been in feeble health for some time, but was only confined to her bed about ten days, having a stroke of paralysis affecting both her body and speech, at which time it was realized she could not recover. She was a most remarkable woman, a woman of great strength of character, indomitable courage mingled with Christian forebearance and patience. She was true in all the relations of life, true to her God, her church, her home, and her community.
