William Winn COCKERHAM
The name Cockerham is of English orgin, designating one who came from Cockerham (homestead on the Cocker river) in Lancashire, England. The name is variously spelled Cockerham, Cockrum, Cockram, Cockran, and Cochran. Researchers suggest that the founder of the Virginia family was one William Cockerham of Dorset, England, born about 1593. William came to America sometime before 1652. "Captain" William Cockerham married Ann Spencer whose father William Spencer came to America 1607, on the "Sarah Constant" They lived in Surry Co. VA. William and Ann had 2 sons, William and Thomas. Son of William and Ann was married to Hannah, 2 Mary. Grandson of Captain William Cockerham married Mary Wynn. There were 2 boys, William and Henry. Henry Cockerham born 1690 of Luenburg Co., VA will dated 19 Sep 1754. He married Elizabeth. William was a Revolutionary soldier and served from Henry County, VA. William married about 1767 to Edith (Eddie) Lavinia Stone, daughter of Mary and Richard Stone a Revolutionary soldier. Edith died about 1791. William had a total of 14 children - 11 children by his 1st wife, Edith Stone and 3 children by his 2nd wife, Nancy Estes. He married his second wife, 20 June 1794, Nancy, daughter of Elisha Estes. On 9 Jan 1800 William W. and Nancy Cockerham sold the farm on Reedy Creek which his father, Henry Cockerham bought in 1752. They then moved to Pendleton District So. Carolina. Some of the information is from Family Records and some is from the 1800 Census Pendleton Dist., So. Carolina. The original home of the family was in Scotland and the original spelling is Cochrane. Died in So. Carolina or Alabama (Information from "Fifty Families" pg. 393-4).

Also have birth and death dates from a book named "Estes" Info also from "50's Family" a chart of the Cockerham Family. Marriage Bond #296 (copy) verifies marriage date of 20 Jun 1793. Nancy was the second wife of William Winn Cockerham and they had 4 children. In 1800 William Winn cockerham and wife Nancy moved to Pendleton Dist., S.C. After his death Nancy, with some of her in-laws, moved to Alabama for a short while, then removed to Mississippi where she died. Nancy Estes was the 2nd wife of William Winn Cockerham. The first wife, Mary Stone was the aunt of Nancy.

Catherine (Kitty) was on the IGI as Kitty but birth place should be Henry Co., VA. Information from the 1800 Census Pendleton Dist. So. Carolina. She married Charles Dobbs, brother of Silas Dobbs and they had 4 children. LDS Ordinances IGI Batch 8127501, sheet #73, Library Call #1260979.
No record of birth and death on Patsy or where she was born. The 1800 Census does not show her but family records and "Mississippi Revolutionary Soldiers book FHL pg. 65 indicates also there was a daughter Patsy.
Originally the family came from Scotland and the original spelling is Cochrane. The family settled in Pendleton District, So Carolina. The settlement was colonized and embraced the present counties - Anderson, Oconee and Pickens - this information from Book 975.72, W2C FHL SLC.
