you will not take it amiss in me representing to you the conduct of John
Tipton, Indian Agent, late of Fort Wayne, when the agency was removed from
Fort Wayne it was thought that it would throw into circulation a considerable
Share of the money paid out to Indians and thereby benefit the inhabitants of
the upper Wabash Settlements, but the fact is there is a complete monopoly
amongst a few of Tiptons creatures. I deem all important that his conduct
should be thoroughly investigated on the following points. First in paying the
Indians their annuities in collecting all the five frank pieces and paying
them to the Indians for dollars thereby making a specualtion of $1000 for
every $1600 paid out and likewise for allowing from 50 to 57 per cent to two
Merchants in Terre-Haute on the Louisville prices when they could have been
bought much lower; if you should require any evidence on the subject I will
refer you to Zachariah Shecott, Esquire Kelso, and Doctor John Durkee and B.
