Thomas STOCKTON
DR. T C STOCKTON, 1911; WILL OF PARENTS PROVED 1 MAR 1747/8; removed to Menallen Twsp, then in York (now Adams) Co, PA where he purchased 300 acres of land in 1765. His son, Robert, had preceded him to that place... In later life he took up his residence with his dau., Elizabeth Waddell, at Chambersburg and removed with her to a place near Mercersberg, PA. where he died May 31, 1795 "A very old man aged over 86 years." He was an elder of the Presby. Church and was buried at Church Hill Cem. at Upper West Conocheague Church 2 or 3 miles east of Chambersburg. This church no longer exists. REV. I Thomas Stockton, in Twsp of Peters, Co. of Franklin, Province of PA, being sick and weak in body but yet in Perfect Mind and memory blessed be God for it. Calling to Mind the mortality of my body I ordain this to be my Last Will and Testament. First of all I recommend my Soul to God that gave it trusting that thro the Death and Suffering of Jesus Christ at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again and ever live in glory with my blessed redeemer. My will is that I be decently buried at the Discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned and as for the Worldy Goods it hath pleased God to endue me with I leave them as follows viz: That Note which I have of my son Thomas Stockton I do bequeath to my son John Stockton his heirs and Assigns. and further that 50 pounds that was Due to me in the year 1786 I bequeath what is due of it only the interest to my son David Stockton, the Remainder to my daughter Elizabeth Waddell. And the other 50 pounds which Was Due in the year 1787 I Do bequeath as followeth. I first allow my funeral Charges occurring thereon, to be paid out of it, and the remainder as followeth. I do bequeath 10 pounds out of it to my son Robert Stockton, and 15 pounds unto my Daughter Isabella Neilson, and 10 pounds to my Daughter Mary Bard, and 10 pounds to my Daughter Margaret Johnston, and 5 pounds to my son Thomas Stockton. I further do order and appoint my soninlaw, William Waddell to be My Whole and Sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament revokeing Disanuling and Disallowing all former Wills and Testaments whatsoever made or commended by me before the day and year writen above. "History of Ross and Highland Co's, OH, pg 64; 27 DEC 1803 Thomas was a grand juror. 1790 York Co., PA census; 2 males over 16; (Thomas & son Thomas); 3 males under 16 (John, William and ?); 3 females (wife, and 2 daus?) This COULD mean that Thomas had 1 more son (b 1774-78) and 2 more daughters (b 1770-72) than we know about now. Cliff notes there was also a listing for a James Stockton, currently unidentified in Straban Twp. But that does not account for the extra children on census listing. CLIFF NEILSON, 7/93; a George Stockton was taxed in 1775-76 in Letterkenny Twsp; George Stoctin/Stocton served with Captain James McConnell's company of the Cumberland militia, composed of Letterkenny Twsp men in DEC 1776. In the same company were his brother, Robert, his brother-in-law, William Waddell, and his nephew, Thomas Neilson; George Stockton witnessed the will of David George Stockton witnessed the will of Davis Shields, dated 2 APR 1773. Proved 28 APR 1773, Cumberland Co., PA, Will B B, pg 153; a second witness, James Jordan, may have been the first husband of George's sister, Margaret; Robert Stockton was granted a Letter of Administration for the estate of his 'deceased brother', George Stockton of Letterkenny Twsp on 20 OCT 1777. There was no mention of other heirs. On 15 MAR 1791, John Stockton, minor son (over 14) of Joseph, dec'd, late of Menallen Twsp, requested the appointment of his step-father, Samuel Nelson, of Hamilton Twsp, Franklin Co., PA, as guardian.
