   Both Alexander  and John were registered as coopers for occupation.

NOTE
       After Alexander Cromarty's brother, James Cromarty, died in 1898 Alexander who was James's oldest brother was given a chance to take over the farming of South Cara. He tried it for three years then gave it up and offerd it to Samuel, his brother.  A picture was taken of the children, Margaret, William, Mary, Alexander and Walter in front of the Lower house where they lived while they were at South Cara.

   OCCUPATION:Alexander served his apprenticeship time as a cooper with Dowl at
    N. Cara, S.Ronaldsay.  He then left with the intentions of going to Canada    if unable to get a job at Glassgow.  He didn't get a job at Glasgow but       with a company to go to Shetland.  In Shetland he got a job with Hay and      Co. which  he worshiped.  He stayed with them until four years before he died.
    Alexander was in charge of the herring curing for his company. So he had       two trades, a cooper (barrel maker) and a fish curer
   PERSONALITY: Excellent dependable workman, quiet, sang tenor in his Church       of Scotland for years.

    OCCUPATION: besides raising 5 chldren she was well known as a dress maker and
               knitter. She went to places on the mainland dress making.
    PERSONALITY: very outgoing with a bright sparkle, could handle most
    situations, even a rat that turned on her when she cornered him, she flattened
    him with a coal shovel.

NOTE
    Came to Provost in 1913 from the Shetland Islands and set up farming NW of
    Provost (NW-14-40-3-W4) where he raised his family. He came by boat leaving
    Glasgow on the Allen Liner Grampian 26 April 1913.

NOTE
    OCCUPATION:  Sandy, as he was known was born in Seaview House and received his
      education in Scalloway Public School. Leaving school he was a short time
      with Harcus Linklater & Co. Merchants Scalloway.  He joined army, first in
      Seaforth Highlanders then Machine Gun Corp. During world War 1 he was badly
      gassed 25 Dec 1917 - received Military Medal.  Returning from war he was a
      short time with Harcus again before starting a small herring business which
      made him well known to the travelling public throughout Shetland.  After
      marrying he went to Lochend, where he conducted a Merchant's business until
      2 years before he died.
    PERSONALITY: A quiet refined man.  When a little boy he was very quiet &
      sensiive but always s good natured.
