For Example a person's age between 70 and 74 would be calculated as 70 years of age. Other interesting notes: Magnus, William's older brother must have turned down his right to get South Cara. After all he was raising a family on the Island of Stronsay where his wife was from when he would have become heir to South Cara at the death of his father in 1845. The other interesting note is that William had a twin, John, who had an equal right to William for South Cara.

Mary Isabella Brown Angus (daughter) of St. Andrews. Fife. Shire in 1965 James lived most of his life on the farm of South Cara, He built the present house (1965) there in about 1892/1894. This house was called Lower House. The old house that James was born in was just a stones throw away from the new one. James could adapt himself to any form of work. He and a few other men built the house. Mary,James's daughter, says she could remember the house being built. James daughter, Mary Isabella Brown Angus, when living at 52A Flat 4 North st St. Andrews, Scotland supplied this information in 1965. Thomas Annal Cromarty along with his parents, Alexander Cromarty & Margaret Annal lived in the Upper House of South Cara in 1902

CENSUS 1881 Dwelling: 46 Castle Street Fraserburgh, Aberdeen, Scotland (at a Lodging House with his cousin, John CROMARTY age 24 from So Ronaldshay, Orkney, Scotland also) Both Alexander and John were registered as coopers for occupation. NOTE After Alexander Cromarty's brother, James Cromarty, died in 1898 Alexander who was James's oldest brother was given a chance to take over the farming of South Cara. He tried it for three years then gave it up and offerd it to Samuel, his brother. A picture was taken of the children, Margaret, William, Mary, Alexander and Walter in front of the Lower house where they lived while they were at South Cara. OCCUPATION:Alexander served his apprenticeship time as a cooper with Dowl at N. Cara, S.Ronaldsay. He then left with the intentions of going to Canada if unable to get a job at Glassgow. He didn't get a job at Glasgow but with a company to go to Shetland. In Shetland he got a job with Hay and Co. which he worshiped. He stayed with them until four years before he died. Alexander was in charge of the herring curing for his company. So he had two trades, a cooper (barrel maker) and a fish curer PERSONALITY: Excellent dependable workman, quiet, sang tenor in his Church of Scotland for years.

Samuel Ross's brother, Alexander, offered him South Cara,the farm and Samuel accepted and Alexander went back to Shetland and worked as a cooper. (1965) NOTE BURIAL: Robert died in the Toronto General Hospital Ont. and was buried in St. John's Cemetery Kingston Rd. Toronto DEATH: Mr Cromarty was native of the Orkney Islands and came to Canada some 30 years ago. He settled in Toronto and had been for many years associted with the MacLaren Imperial cheese Co. Ltd. on Front Street. A prominent member of Kew Beach Presbyterian Church, Mr Cromarty was also one of the original members of the 48th Highlanders and was for many years a color sergeant in that distinguished corps. In Masonic circles he was equally well known, fist as a master mason in the Beaches Lodge, and latterly as a charter member of the recently organized John Ross Robertson Lodge. He was also a member of the Toronto male chorus. A prominent bowler, Mr Cromarty was very well know to members of the Kew Beach and Balmy Beach clubs and in Bowling circles. His well known smile and his cheery greeting will be greatly missed. Mr. Cromarty leves besides his widow, a son, Dr. R. Parker Cromarty B.A., M.B., of Toronto University, and M.SC. of McKGill. Dr. Cromarty was a fourth year student when war broke out,but volunteered at once and was in Flanders when the military department recalled him to complete his course. There is one daughter Miss Hazel Cromarty.
He married Margaret Gutcher 14 May 1846 at So. Cara, Grimness, So. Ronaldsay, Orkney, Scotland . Margaret Gutcher was born at Gaira, Sandwick, So. Ronaldsay, Orkney, Scotland 18 Feb 1821 daughter of John Gutcher and Isabella Symison .
