                   Peter, the immigrant, was orphaned at an early age by the death of both parents.  He was raised by a group of Quaker Friends in Hereford.  In May 1677, he joined 230 Quakers who departed for America on the ship "Kent".  On June 16, 1677,they sailed up the Delaware River past what is now Camden, NJ, landing at a small dock on the north bank of Rancocas Creek, now Delanco, NJ.  As Peter disembarked, a local official mistakingly recorded his name as Stringham which has remained the family surname for more than 300 years.

Peter first found work atthe Halstead Rope Company in the nearby village of Beverly, NJ.  The businesswas owned by Joseph and Timothy Halstead.  In 1678, Joseph died leaving a widow, Susannah (Harcourt), and five children, Isabel, Abigail, Hannah, James, and Samuel.  In 1679, Peter married Susannah who died in 1682.  Following the deathof his wife, Peter willed twenty-five pounds to each of her five children.

Peter moved to Long Island, NY, first to the village of Jamaica and later to theHempstead area.  In 1683, he married Anne Owen, daughter of a prominent Welchfamily.  They raised a family of twelve children.

                   There is no public record of Hannah's birth date which has created confusion over the identity of her mother.  Most family researchers list it 03 APR 1676 which is suspect in that it precedes Peter Stringham's 1677 immigration to America.  Further, most researchers list Anne Owen, Peter Stringham's second wife as her mother.  Peter and Anne were married in 1683.  If Anne were Hannah's mother,Hannah would have been no older than 11 at the time of her reported 1694 marriage to Richard Cheesman.  It is more probable she was born 1679-1682 when PeterStringham was was married to Susannah Harcourt.
