Williamstown, MA; Private, Enlisted for 3 months in Captain William
Douglass' Co. of Col. Benj. Simonds' regiment of the MA Line (Berkshire
Co. Militia). Company marched to Ticonderoga. Served until March, 1777
and was discharged. Again enlisted in Captain Isaac Warren's Co. Col.
Seth J. Bailey'sregiment of 2nd MA Line of 4th Brigade. (Capt. Issac
Warren's (6th) Co., Col.Bailey's regiment, return dated Camp Valley
Forge, 24 Jan. 1778) Also, private in Capt. Seth Drew's Co. of Col. John
Bailey's Regt. Served until Dec. 20,1780 when he was taken ill. Was
never able to reenlist and was a cripple allhis life. Widow recieved
pension. (Veterans Administration, Washington, DC,and Massachusetts
Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution)
Stature: 5'10", complexion: Florid, hair: sandy red.

Old family bible has note that Ruth Smedleyserved with her husband in
the Revolutionary War and that she made many a cupof tea for George
Washington.
Headstone: "Ruth Smedley, wife of Jedidiah Smedley, died Jan. 11, 1842,
aged 99 years, seventeen days"
