Davis WHELCHEL
Government records show that Davis Whelchel, his three brothers, and father served throughout the Revolutionary War. One brother, John, and probably all, participated in the final stand at the Battle of Cowpens. This battle was fought twenty nine miles from their homes on the bank of Broad River(S.C.?). He also fought in the Battles of Kings Mountain and Blackstock.** It is believed that Davis and Nancy had either 11 or 12 children. I have 10 names.**
Since 1782 was the concluding period of the Revolutionary War,and the homesite of his father, Davis Whelchel, and brothers was in that portion of South Carolina being invaded by british forces, and the colonial hero repelling them was General Francis Marion, these gave impetus for naming the youngster Francis.
Very soon after the Revolutionary War Battle of Cowpens Davis Whelchel who was the father of Francis, joined the movement westward into North Carolina, now the state of Tennessee. The exact location has been traditionally revealed to be Rutherford County, and concerning their sojourn there nothing is known. Between 1810 and 1820 at least four sons of Davis Whelchel entered the territory of Indiana. These were John, Francis, William and Charles Barnes, as evidenced by U.S. Census of those years. While John and William finally settled in Polk County, Missouri about 1840, and trace of Charles Barnes is unknown, Francis remained in Hamilton County, Indiana for the rest of his life.
