The St. George News Friday 16 March 1923OBITUARYSamuel Erastus George was born in Rals county, Missouri, October 17, 1 847, and passed away February23, 1923, at 9:25 of pneumonia, aged 75 y ears, 4 months and 6 days.He was the son of Mathew and Sarah Ann George, the oldest of a family o f eleven children, he moved in infancy with his parents to Waploo(sic) c ounty, Iowa, where they remained until the fall of 1864, coming to Kans as with his parents at the age of 17 years, settled in Jackson county, f ourteen miles west of Holton, Kansas on Big Soldier creek, remaining wi th his parentst until 1870, when he moved to Sumner county, kansas retu rning to his parents in the spring of 1872, in June the same year he jo ined the M. E. church continuing in this faith until death.Uniting in marriage to Mary Edwards, November 14, 1873, eleven childr en being born to this union, two dying in infancy, the remaining nine a re left to mourn the loss of their father, also three brothers and five s isters, fifty one grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. His w ife preceeded him December 11, 1916.They moved to his father's farm where they remained one year, then re turned to the old home place near the Vermillion in Pottawatomie county , where they reared their family to man and womanhood. After the death o f his wife he made his home the greater part with his youngest daughter , Mrs Estella Phillis, visitng all his children and grandchildren durin g the summer months and growing more earnest in his christian faith as a ge advanced, he was always honest and upright in all his dealing with h is fellow men.He had a severe cold and illness during December and called for all h is children but became quite himself again but realizing his short stay w ould often speak of his going home, and had his daughter to write a par t of his obituary, as he wished it published. On Monday before his deat h he came down from his room and sit in his chair near his youngest gra ndson "George" (four months old) and whistled to babe who laughed in gl ee, this was his last work, as he lay afterward quiet and peaceable onl y fussed when he needed attenditon that he was such a care to his daugh ter, in this peaceful way he died.The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. W. Tanner, who read Hebrews XII c hapter first, 17th verse who gave a veery appropiate sermon and the son gs were well rendered at the Vermillion church and burial in Polly Cree k cemetery.Now dear grandpa is dead/ His stories and songs are done/ His children m ust follow him/ Yes one by one, and all plan to meet him, in the sweet b ye and bye/ For all that is left is dear children and I/ No more will w e hide the specks on his cap/ No more will we tease him while taking hi s nap/ Never more will he sit in his chair so small/ The dear old rocke r now stands by the wall/ A relative
