The original nationality of Granger is unmistakable. Upon the first
introduction of the word "Grange" into England, it was applied to the farmhouseor the homestead, of the outlying fields or manor of some Abbey or Priory, and the Bailiff who presided over one was called "Ate Grange", and afterward Granger, as the word Grange became anglicized. Its application and meaning was enlarged, and it also denoted a tract of land on which grain was
grown.
The lands of course, were held by great families, who each owned many farms, andthe name Granger would not apply to them, but to their employees. The family, therefore, cannot be said to be of high or noble birth, but probably sprung from the middle class of France or England.

Lancelot Granger:The meaning of the name Lancelot is " A little Angol". Lancelot Granger was born in the west of England, and when he was a lad of 12 or 14 years, he was stolen from his mother, (his father being dead), and brought to Plymouth Mass., where he was sold (apprenticed), to serve 2 years for his passage. Hehad served on the ship as cabin boy.
When Lancelot was living in Ipswich, he courted and married the daughter of a
Puritan, and Elder in the church, and man of position and means. Lancelot
himself was never a member of the church at Newbury. Lancelot was a thick-set, sturdy man, who was able to defend himself.
He was in Ipswich in 1648.

Samuel was a farmer, as were all of his brothers. In Mar 1695/6 he petitioned
the town for an allotment of 40 acres, and this was granted him on 29 Nov 1697.
He took but little interest in town politics. The positions of fence viewer and
"Suryeghor of Wayes" being the only offices he held. Evidently he confined
himself closely to his farm and family.
