William MCALVEY
Family Tree
Of PA. Harris history stated that he was 3 months old when he came to America. Possibly started as McIllevy. He and Margaret settled in Stone Valley, some 14 miles from Petersboro, Huntingdon County, PA. An 1821 letter to their daughter Jenny (McElvey) Reed from her Uncle William Harris, in N.C., referred to Jenny's aged father: "On the 13th of last March, my fourth and youngest daughter, Ann, was married to a young man of the name of EliasSnell soldier under your father as an acting Colonel in the Militia Service in the Revolutionary War of 76." It is not known if the McAlvey's fort in that area in PA was named for this family.
They married in PA, and settled just East of Altoona.
THe delightful correspondence exchanged between Jenny and her Uncle William Harris suggests that the family was well educated and mannered, as in the letter from Uncle William dated 25 Feb 1817, in which he wrote concerning Jenny's letter: "And as for the Letters, I thought if they were your own handwriting and dictation that you must have been one of the best accomplished women in the State of Pennsylvania. And I think now that your son William is a man of more than common learning...."
