Samuel's father was a member of the Inner Circle or Brethren of Bethania and farmed land in the Ephrata area. Thus Samuel grew up in the most rigorous mode of life of the Ephrata Brethren. The Ephrata Cloisters became a hospital fro the sick & wounded of the Revolution. Samuel fought in the Revolutionary War in 1781-82. He later became a merchant at Abbotstown, Cumberland, PA. It started at or near Michael Geiselman's mill in East Berlin. The mill was at the East end of the borough, and was owned by Borius Fahnestock (born 1749). Samuel's descendant William Resser, of East Berlin, still owns the account book in which he charged the amounts paid to his children. His second wife was a sister of Rear Admiral Alexander Murray, who fought in the Mexican and Civil Wars who was given a ring worth $9000, setwith 81 diamonds, by the Tsar of Russia.
