Alfred Hamilton FAHNESTOCK
REFN: 7707 Received a prize for English poetry his freshman year at college inNew Jersey. His junior year, he won the Orator 1st Prize, and was chosen to write the Ode of Welcome for the Centennial Celebration of the Cliosophic Society. He was Salutorian at Commencement. He taught at the college of NJfrom 1870 to 1873, while studying theology at Princeton, where he graduated in 1871. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of New Brunswick, NJ, 4/15/1874. He became Pastor of the 1st Ward Presbyterian Church, Syracuse, NY,from 1/24/1875 until he died. He got his Doctor of Divinity from WashingtonCollege, TN, 4/12/1894. He was at home in the classics, but his most striking translation was of the hymn, "Dies Irae."

With Dr. Theodore Forgerson, heco-authored the Forgerson-Fahnestock Music Test used by schools throughout the country. He is also author of several courses of school music.
