He became one of the leading physicians,carrying a practice for 30 years. For a long time, in connection with his practice, he had a drug store, on West King Street, above the Sorrel Horse Hotel. He was the founder of the Lancaster City and County Medical Society; his membership dated from 1844. A man of many accomplishments, and noted for his philanthropy. He was the first person in the city to take daguerreotypes, with the help of James Dament. He and his father-in-law, Henry Reigert, were the first to notify James Buchanan of his election to the Presidency, on 6/19/1856. He published several books on various subjects including astronomyand his theory that diseases should be treated mentally.
