Very devout, he was a member of the Great Valley Presbyterian Church, a ruling elder at the age of 25. He wasa member of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, he commanded respect and confidence of his community. He took over management of the WarrenInn in 1834, and ran it as a strictly temperance hotel, selling nothing on the Sabbath. This policy, together with the coming of the railroad, caused him to fail. He sold out in 1842, to Charles and Willam C. Thompson. Prior to1842, he was also Postmaster of the community.
