Obituary
I am 90% sure that this these are the same Jonathan Graffs. 6/15/09 - I have definite proof that this is our Jonathan. In the Funeral home records for Augusta, it states that her father Jonathan was born in Abbottstown, York, PA. Hezekiah and Jonathan Graff were blacksmiths in Mt. Vernon. Mentioned in History of Knox County - pg 399. History of Abbottstown states that Blacksmithing was one of the occupations of Abbottstown. Henry Grafe (died 1854) and wife Susannah signed one such apprentice document in that book. 1840 he was in Mount Vernon. There was 1 male under 5, 2 males between 20 and 30, and one female between 20 and 30. 1858 - Jonathan was 1st member of the board of education. 1860 in Mt. Vernon. All 6 kids were there. He was a blacksmith. 1870 census Jonathan had a wife Matilda, and son, Henry (aged 32, who was a blacksmith). Henry was born in PA. Son Jonathan and wife Matilda lived next door. 1879 - The Ohio Mutual Aid Association - Jonathan was one of the blacksmiths. There was also a J.A. Graff, who was one of the principal merchants. 1880 - In Mt. Vernon, Knox, Ohio. His wife apparently had already passed away. He was a blacksmith, aged 68. Another son, I am assuming, named Jonathan, lived next door. He was 21 years old and married to Ida. They were 21 and 19 years old and born in OH. His son-in-law and his family were living with him at the time. The daughter would have been Augusta. Her children were Albert J., Jonathan and Harry. Obituary from the Democratic Banner: "Jonathan Graff, died 5-3-1900 at age 89, wife Matilda, died at his home on E. Front St., his wife died many years ago. Survived by following children; Jonathan Graff & Mrs. Al Williams of this city & Mrs. E. Vance of Columbus. Buried at Mount View Cemetery." Obituary and death notices in Mt. Vernon, OH newspapers, Vol 1 Graff, Jonathan 3 May 1900 9 Dec 1811 Bargett,Matilda Blacksmith, b. Adams Co, Mar 1836, 9 children, 3 survive, Mrs. Williams, Mr. Jonathan Graff (Jr), and Mrs Agnew Vance (Matilda). Died at daughter Augusta Willams. 3/26/10 -There is a Mary Graff in the family burial plot, who was born about 1812/13. She died at age 72. cause of death, cancer. I think that she is Mrs. Mary McLain, who a Jonathan Graff married on 26 Dec 1882. They were married by C.L. Work.

There are Bargetts in the census. . She was 69 and 6 months at her death, which would put her birthdate about Apr 1810. Death noted in Knox Death Records Book 1, 1884 - 1899, pg 47 She died fromgeneral debility in Clinton, New Wilmington, is in Lawrence County, to the West of PA. I got her birthplace from Augusta's funeral home records. Interesting that the person with the name before her in the death records had "his" parents name as Bargett. I wonder if they actually meant hers???

4 Jul 2009 - this James could not have been alive on 3 May 1900, because he wasn't listed in his father's obit. However, there is a James Graff, in Green in 1900, who has a son Smith.
