Joshua Stephens was a staunch Whig. In the Revolutionary War he served under Col. Cleaveland and took part in the battle of Kings Mountain and other minor skirmishes of the war. The story is told that during the Battle of Kings Mountain, Col. Ferguson, the British commander, felled his fine cream colored mare, which galloped down the mountain bearing the empty saddle, and was captured by Joshua Stephens. Three of Joshua's sons, Elisha, John and Levi, fought for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
Elisha Stephens was a Methodist preacher. His brothers, Isaiah, Joseph, Absalom, and Jeremiah were Baptist preachers.
He married Elizabeth Dyer Abt 1755 . Elizabeth Dyer was born at Brunswick, Brunswick, Virginia 3 Apr 1736 daughter of John S. Dyer and Priscilla Elizabeth Bluford .
