BIOGRAPHY - H. Crysler Hilliker notes found in Eva Brook Donly Museum, 109 Norfolk St. South, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada N3Y 2W3 William was a pioneer miller and farmer. The Norwich cemtery stone gives his birthdate as 1758. He came to Norwich from Dutchess County before 1820 possibly as early as 1812. Williamm's wife was Deborah (Tucker?). The Peter Lossing map of 1820 shows William on the south half of Lot 2 Con 5 of North Norwich Township. The registry office shows 100 acres were sold to William by Peter Lossing on June 5, 1822. Here he had a saw mill and possibly a grist mill on Otter Creek. One of the earliest trails or roads ran from the Quaker Street settlement to Hilliker's mill and then to Lossing's mill on to Otterville. Deborah was received into membership in the Society of Friends on Jan 12, 1820. The rest of the family were Methodists. William had three sons, Henry, Benjamin and Giles. Daughters are mentioned in William's will but no names are given. The will (court records, London, Ontario) listed two of the more valuable possessions as a red cow and a wagon each valued at pounds 2/10. His will was witnessed by David Hagerman, Benjamin Hilliker and Michael Stover. Thewill dated Dec. 10, 1820 bequeaths the farm and mill to Benjamin with Giles being given 100 acres. Both William and Debbie, as she is referred to in Wiliiam's will, died on August 16, 1825. (Throckmorton's Diary and cemetery stone).
BIOGRAPHY - H. Crysler Hilliker notes found in Eva Brook Donly Museum, 109 Norfolk St. South, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada N3Y 2W3 Henry arrived in 1812 and settled on Lot 9 Concession 5. (Henry's stone in Norwich cemetery says he was a "native of Dutchess County" and died Sept 29 1839 at the age of 71). He was the son of William and the brother of Benjamin and Giles. His wife, Bertha, was from Newburg, New York and died in October 1834 at the age of 55. The present Norwich cemetery was (91/4 acres) off of Henry's lot and his son. Joshua Done(Doan), was considered to be the first person buried there after a fall from a horse in Jan 4 1824. (His name is spelled Done on the grave marker but several local references have it spelled Doan possibly for Joshua Doan, a Quaker from Sparta who was an active organizer in the Rebellion of 1837 or for the Doan family of the area). Henry's daugher, Francis, married David Hagerman, [(Mar 6, 1824 (Throckmorton Diary)]. He was from Dutchess County. David built a house on the property in 1813. The Hagerman house is on the 1857 Tremaine map. In the 1880's the house was completely remodelled but the original house was incorporated into the new one and it sill stands. Both Henry and David were carpenters. It was later owned by David's daughter, Mrs. Emma Smiley.
