Notes:
William was a Tory and he had no doubt was consciously so; he said he talked to him and his other relatives talked to him and tried to convince him of his error, but it availed nothing; they could not move him from his position. He said he would not fight against his country, and he could not fight against the Crown guilty of perjury and treason. At the close of the War or a short time after he removed to Natches in a territory then belonging to Spain. He told my grandfather (his brother-in-law) that he could not reconcile it to his feelings to remain in N.C.; that the finger of scorn would always be pointed not only at him, but at his children.
