NOTE: Birth in Germany or Switzerland. More research needed.

RESEARCH NOTE: The Groff Book, Vol II by CLyde Groff proports Johan Nathias, brother to Henry, was the son of Hans Heinrich Groff, Baptized 16 February 1690, in Rafz, Zurich, Switzerland. This line extends to Hans Conrad Groff (poss 18:4) in Rafz Church Records. This has not yet been proven

RESEARCH NOTE: Huffelsheim Church Records do not list Johan or Johan Mathias or Mathias that could have been proven.

RESEARCH NOTE: Haffelshein Church records had no Groff marriages 1708-1798.

FIRST A NOTE ON WHO HE ISNT : One World Tree has this as Johan M. Graef, married to Anna. This is the wrong Mathias. IGI had a birthdate of abt 1725 in Huffelsheim, Germany. I am sure that this is the Mathius Graff of Jacob Graef and Maria Philipina Stormer, not ours. If this was our dates, this would have made him about 18 years older than his wife, which is a possibility, but research shows there were 3 Mathias Graffs, one in Philadelphia (son of Jacob Graef and Maria Stormer), and another one in Lancaster, also not ours.

Feb 2010 - I did research at the Family History Library in SLC and there are at least 6 Johan Mathias Graffs - or some spelling similar, who emigrated to the US in the early to mid 1700s. No wives are on ships registers, nor are there any male children under 16. Only males over 16. So, it is hard to figure out who is who.

There is a death date of 1773 (floating in the literature and linked to our Mathias Graff) it is not ours. That is Johann Mathias maybe the son of Jacob Graef, 1691- 1772. That Mathias Graff came to the U.S. in 1741 on the "Molly" with his wife Maria Phillipina Stormer. They were married on 18 July 1718, in Hoffelsbein, Germany. Her parents were Herman and Susanna. This Johann Mathias' brother Jacob lived at 7th and Market Sts. in Philadelphia, and rented a room to Thomas Jefferson. That's where he wrote the Declaration of Independence. So, no we are not related.

The Groff book says that Mathias had 3 sons over 16, one under 16 and 2 daughters in 1790. I am sure that the Groff book is inaccurate, as are many Graff researchers - I think that they relied on that Groff book, which I have come to totally abhor. That book has mixed data between families, and mixed Henrys, etc. Most researchers only use it to get leads.

There is another Mathias Graff in Paradise, as he bought land after 1800, when we know that our Mathias had died. I havent gotten the land deed yet, to see if it was actually bought by a Mathias, or it was land previously owned by Mathias. A distinct possibility - as grant deeds often mentioned the genealogy of the land.

There was a Matthew Graff who was taxed in Paradise Township in 1783 (probably ours) .There is also a Valentine Graff noted. We cannot find any connection between Valentine (connected with a Michael and a John) and our family.

NOW FOR OURS
(Johann)Matthias /Graff/ was what I originally had. I took the name off of the return of death of John Henry.
His will was H - 517, York Historical Society.

Nov 16, 2008: I have just found that Mattheus was listed as John Tais Greb, who along with Anna Gertrude Greb, had a daughter Maria Catharine Greb, born on 8 Sep 1765, the same as Mattheus and Anna Gertraut. The sponsors were Gerhard Greb and Maria Catharine Greb (Gerhard and Catharine).
I have found this John Tais a couple of times now. Interesting abbreviation or whatever.

Matthias Graef (at Wolf's) was sponsor for Magdalene Vockenroth, daughter of John Geo. and Elizabeth Vockenroth. 1781. Matthias Graef (at Wolf's) was sponsor for John George Spiess, son of Ludwig and Barbara Spiess,1785.

                   I also have Gartrant, Gertaut.
The return of death of John Henry says Gertrude.
When Mathias' will was probated it listed Gertrude as executix, and Anna as the wife
Inventory taken on her estate 17 Oct 1823.

She was sponsor for Elizabeth Deisinger, daughter of Elizabeth and John Deisinger. She was born on 20 Jul 1800. The other sponsor was Anna Maria Deisinger.

Notes:
I got her name from the records of Vernon Heilman, supposedly records are from Wolf's Church and Lischy's Church Records, First Reform Church of York, PA.
She was not mentioned in her father's will.
There is an Anna Maria Graff in the IGI file born 12 Aug 1835 in Simmerath, Rheinland, Poland. She was baptized 13 Jun 1992, WASHI, endowed on 18 Feb 1993, WASHI. Her parents are Mathias Graff and Anna Gertrudis Keischgens - sealed to parents on 25 Feb 1993 at WASHI. That is pretty close.
This was extracted from a birth or christening record for this locality.
She is not listed in her father's will if she existed. She is also not listed in her mother's will in 1823.
I have the Wolf's church record of a child born to this couple, with Matthias and Anna Graef as the sponsors.
I have the record from Jacob Lischy's Private pastoral record listing her as Anna Maria Greb, her father as Matheus Greb, and mother as Anna Gertraut Greb. Rather suspicious. Sponsors were Heinrich and Anna Maria Lauer.

Church record has her as Anna Maria Leinbach, mother of Anna Maria Leinbach, born 16 Sep 1783.

Notes:
I also have a name of Johan Heinrich (Henry) and just Henry.
I also have a birthdate of 27 Oct. 1763. I used the info from the Genealogical abstracts of Adams County and his return of death.
Marriage record has Henry Greef.
I also have a death date of 24 Feb 1854. He was married to Susanna and Catherine.
16 Nov 2008: We thought that Henry was a son of Susanna, but I am sure that this is false. Susanna was the 2nd wife.
This is from Geneological Abstracts of Adams County, PA.- birth, marriage and Death records 1852-1855. pgs 974-842. AL: No.1.
This has his birthdate as 29 Oct 1763, and death as 25 Feb 1854. I saw the plaque in the graveyard on 9/21/97. The dates were 1761-1851. The marker was a composite marker, the actual grave has the correct dates.
IGI has a death date of 4 Sep 1843 (Some had this as Susanna's death date - but I know that is incorrect). It also has Graff or Grafe.

There is a Johann Heinrich Greb, baptized Feb 1764, by Jacob Lischy. This is recorded in his private pastoral record. The mother is Anna Gertraut Greb and Johann Heinrich Greb is a sponsor. Father is Joh Deis Graff.
There is a Henry Graeff in the 1800 Census, in Paradise Township.
He had 1 male under 10
2 Males 10 - 16
1 male 26 - 45 (obviously the husband)
4 females under 10
1 female 26 - 45 (obviously the wife)

1850 census:
Henry, aged 88,
Susanah, aged 53 (matches what we now have)
Mary Marshall aged 25 ????
Death record at St; John's Lutheran Church in Abbottstown. Aged 90 - 3- 0. It says the 26th of Feb 1854.
They have him as Henry Graef. Died of old age.

Return of death (which I have) states John Henry Grafe. Occupation - farmer.
I used the information on the return of death.

I saw the cemetery records (headstone data) from 1932 - it stated Henry Grafe. Died at age 90 - 3- 27.

One World Tree has this as Anna Maria Graef. I got the death date from there also.
At the birth of her daughter Elizabeth, she was listed as Maria Catherine Graeff.
Could be Catharina (from Wolf's - at the baptism of Anna Maria Cathatina).

There is an obvious descrepency if Maria Catherine or Anna Maria was the wife of Peter Heilman.
Wolfs church has her as Catharina at the birth of Johannes (John) in 1789.
First Reformed (Trinity) Church has their marriage, she is listed as Catharine Gref. They are listed as Heilmann.

Mentioned in one place as Katrina.

One of the records has last name as Greb.

Notes:
There is a Christian Graeff, living in Paradise during the 1800 census. It would fit our Christian.
He is mentioned in his father's will, dated 10 Sep 1793, proved 2 Nov 1793.
His administrative account stated his widow as Mary Graeff (with Elizabeth crossed out).
He owned a plantation in Paradise Twp, which was appraised after his death. It consisted of 150 acres more or less, bounded by the lands of Peter Heilman, Widow Haar, Frederick Solverbehr, Anthony Brignar (?) and John Henry.
Christian must have been dead when his mother wrote her will in 1823, as she mentions his 3 children, but not him.
OCD states 3 children.
10 Mar 2008 - I am wondering if Anna Gertraut and Nancy are the same person. Nancy is in the will, I have the baptismal records of Anna Gertraut.

In the administrative bond, after his death, there is a Mary Graff who received a payment of 50 whatever, right after her mother. I don't know if this is Maria Catharine or not.

In the 1800 census (which I have a copy of) Christian Graff and Christian Linebach(er), possibly his brother-in-law, were listed next to each other.

There is a marriage record for a Christian Gref, and a Hannah Strubel. That marriage was on 13 Jan 1789. That would be about the right age for a marriage and fit with their children's births.

I am sure that he died Bef 9 Jul 1823. I used the newspaper date for a Christian Graeff. (Marriages and Deaths from The York Resgister 1821 - 1830, Family Line Publications, Westminister, Maryland, 1995.)
Christian Graeff, page 11.
56. Aug. 20, 1822 (Tuesday)
The reason I have 9/20 is because the paper might have been the 20th, but it says died....On the 9th inst. Christian Graeff of Paradise Twp, in his 50th year.

This is from St. Paul's Reformed(Wolf's): Looks like Christian
