Alvah Grinell Howland Sr. was born on 01 Sep 1899 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA as the fifth child of Beriah G. Howland and Marietta Manchester. He had four siblings, namely: Louise R., Alton M., Beriah Ebenezer, and Edna B.. He died on 19 Sep 1966 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. When he was 21, He married Jennie Mildred Owen,daughter of James Williamson Owen Jr. and Eliza Jennie Green, on 25 May 1921 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.

Alvah Grinell Howland Sr. and Jennie Mildred Owen had the following children:

1.	Alvah Grinell Howland Jr. was born on 17 Nov 1923 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. He died on 05 Aug 2005 in Manchester, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, USA. He married Marjorie Beatrice Sisson on 20 Jun 1943 in Atlantic City, Atlantic, New Jersey, USA.
2.	Eleanor M. Howland was born on 16 Apr 1922 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. She married Herbert David Smith on 30 Mar 1946 in Mattapoisett, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.
3.	Edna Louise Howland was born on 05 May 1926 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 05 Mar 2002 in Acushnet, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.
4.	James B. Howland was born on 20 Apr 1930 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. He married Diane Herrick on 17 Mar 1955.
Owned one of the first A&P grocey stores. On the 1920 census he is listed as a machinst at a cotton mill. The 1930 census lists him as a pressman for a newspaper. On the 1940 US census he is living in Mattapoisett, MA. and works as an Inspector at Morse Twist Drill. It looks like he went to school until the 8th grade. Alvah had a back porch where he raised either parakeets or canaries and he would sell them. He died in his sleep. His wife Mildred reports she was awaken by the sound of snoring and told him to, "roll over Alvah, you are snoring." Later she realized he had died during the night. Buried Peckham West Cemetery, New Bedford.
