Owned one of the first A&P grocey stores. On the 1920 census he is listed as a machinst at a cotton mill. The 1930 census lists him as a pressman for a newspaper. On the 1940 US census he is living in Mattapoisett, MA. and works as an Inspector at Morse Twist Drill. It looks like he went to school until the 8th grade. Alvah had a back porch where he raised either parakeets or canaries and he would sell them. He died in his sleep. His wife Mildred reports she was awaken by the sound of snoring and told him to, "roll over Alvah, you are snoring." Later she realized he had died during the night. Buried Peckham West Cemetery, New Bedford.

Alvah graduated from Bristol County Agricultural School and later worked at Darling's Flower Shop in Fairhaven, MA. In 1949 him and his wife lived at 148 Maxfield St., New Bedford, MA. and by 1955 they lived at 14 Sylvia St., in Fairhaven, MA. He once owned Howlands Greenhouses in Bridgewater, MA. supplying Shaws grocey store chain with flowers in the New England area. Alvah loved gardening and staying active. By 1989 they were living in Epson, N.H. Alvah also served in WWII, as a pilot instructor training fighter pilots. Buried in N.H. Veteran's State Cemetery 110 Daniel Webster Highway (Rt 3) in Boscawen, N.H. in section 1, row E, site 635.
