Descriptionof picture in front of store: July 10th, 1988 Sunday Standard Times ran this picture with story "Nearly a century ago, Beriah Howland's country store at the southeast corner of Shawmut Avenue and Durfee Street, New Bedford, catered to walk-in residents of the area and delivered groceries and provisions by horse and wagon. Helen Hathaway of Fairhaven lent the old photo, which had "Susie From Grace, Dec 25, 1895" inscribed on the back. Grace was Grace (Howland) Stevens, at left in the doorway, mother of Helen (Stevens) Hathaway and a bookkeeper in her brother's store. Others in the picture are identified, from left, as Louise Howland, Beriah Howland and Herbert Vinal, the deliveryman. [a picture of the 1988 variety store occupying the space was also pictured] Copy of the original article in my file. NOTE:{GR. Owned one of the first A&P grocey stores. On the 1920 census he is listed as a machinst at a cotton mill. The 1930 census lists him as a pressman for a newspaper. On the 1940 US census he is living in Mattapoisett, MA. and works as an Inspector at Morse Twist Drill. It looks like he went to school until the 8th grade. Alvah had a back porch where he raised either parakeets or canaries and he would sell them. He died in his sleep. His wife Mildred reports she was awaken by the sound of snoring and told him to, "roll over Alvah, you are snoring." Later she realized he had died during the night. Buried Peckham West Cemetery, New Bedford.
