                   Ebenezer Howland



Ebenezer Howland was born on 14 May 1831 in Tiverton, Newport, Rhode Island, USA as the fourth child of Beriah Goddard Howland and Nancy Eddy. He had four siblings, namely: Medora A., John R., John E., and Helen M.. He died on 07 Apr 1890 in Fairhaven, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. When he was 21, He married Maria L. Sherman,daughter of David Sherman and Nancy Rider, on 06 Jun 1852 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.

Ebenezer Howland and Maria L. Sherman had the following children:

1.	Ida M. Howland was born on 26 Nov 1853 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 28 Feb 1931 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.
2.	Mary Ann Howland was born on 25 May 1858 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 16 Jan 1899 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.
3.	Lucy E. Howland was born on 12 Jan 1856 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 27 Feb 1933 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.
4.	Grace L. Howland was born on 28 May 1872 in Mattapoisett, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. She died in 1953.
5.	Sarah (Sadie) C. Howland was born on 13 Nov 1869 in Mattapoisett, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 27 Dec 1880 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.
6.	Beriah G. Howland was born on 14 Apr 1860 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. He died on 21 Dec 1861 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.
7.	Nancy Cora Howland was born on 26 Oct 1866 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. She died on 01 Jan 1916 in Fairhaven, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.
8.	Beriah G. Howland was born on 26 Sep 1862 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. He died on 05 Jul 1942 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. He married Marietta Manchester on 24 Dec 1882 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.
Ebenezer served in the Civil War on the Union side, enlisted in 47th Mass. MilitiaInfantry, Co. D and enlisted 9/1/1862, mustered on 9/20/1862 and mustered out 9/1/1863. The regiment was organized at Camp Stanton, Boxford in September and October 1862. The regiment was transferred to Camp Meigs, Readville (Boston) whre organization and equipment was completed. On 12/21 the regiment left from New York on the steamer, Mississippi, bound for New Orleans. Once there Companies D and H were twice sent across Lake Ponchartrain where they captured a steamboat, a schooner and a large amount of cotton. On 8/5/1863 the 47th embarked on the steamer, "Continental" at Carrollton and proceeded up the Mississippi to Cairo, IL. and there entrained for Boston, MA. Although the regiment had never been in action, it had performed the duties assigned to it in a mostly worthy manner. Buried in Peckham West cemetery in New Bedford, MA., althought the cemetery can find no record of him being buried there, we know he has a stone and the cemetery was able to tell us his wife Maria was buried in that lot. There are no single lots in this cemetery so we would have to assume that he is buried where his stone is and the cemetery has an error in reocrds or lost his burial record Ebenezer's stone was applied for in 1933 by his son Beriah G., for the unmarked grave of a veteran. The government provided the stone but Beriah had to pick it up at the train station and place it on Ebenezer's grave This explains why only his military service is noted on the stone and not birth and death dates. The application clearly states he is in Peckham West Cemetery. Only 6 of his children were living at the time of his death. His estate of $1,700 was divided between his wife and 6 children. The 1865 census lists him as a stone mason and the 1870 census as a farmer. Ebenezer was also a merchant and his height was 5' 10".
