John Gorham was thought to have come to American aboard the "Philip" in June 1635. John Howland, his father-in-law, sold to him half the lands in Marshfield, Massachusetts which Howland had bought from Governor William Bradford.John was elected Constable of Marshfield in 1648. He was made a freeman on June 4, 1650, and a member of the Grand Inquest of Plymouth Colony. He and his family moved to Yarmouth, Massachusetts in 1652, and then went on to Barnstable where he owned a grist mill and a tannery. He was a surveyor of highways in 1654. As a Captain and a Colonel in the militia in King Philip's War, he took part in the Narragansett fight in December 1675, defending the company against the Indians.
   He was wounded and died of a resulting fever from an infected gunshot wound.
