Jean or Jan Vigne or Guillamme Vigne migrated to New Amsterdam as early as 1614. He was a Frenchman, a Hugenot from Valenciennes, Department du Nord, France. (A Walloon pioneer). He was probably a Protestant. The date of his death is unknown. (See Colonel George Stewart and Margaret Harris, their ancestors and Descendents by Robert Stewart D.D.L.L.D)
A New York Times article stated that Jean owned the first Brewery in New York, located on Vine (Vigne) Street, New York. I don't know whether this was this Jean or his child.
"Vigne" (French) spelled phonetically in Dutch becomes Vinje, Vinge, Vienge, Finge, and sometimes Van Gee.
"Jean" (French) becomes Jan in Dutch records.
The pioneer Vigne's name was not "Jean" but Guillaume (French), Willem (often in the mouth of his neighbors) and Gulyne (in Dutch records). IGI also has Geleyn.
