JAMES HARRIS, Jr., son of James and Mary McIlhenny Harris, was born 1740 in Lancaster, PA and died 3 Dec 1810. He married Hannah Stapleton. She was born 14 May 1744 in St. Georges Parish, Harford, Maryland, and died 1812 in Rowan, NC. (NOTE: See Will of Edward Stapleton which I found below).
Known issue:
1. John, was born in 1775.
2. James, was born 10 Feb 1777 in Rowan, NC.
NOTE: I also find on web Susannah Harris who married Isaac
Whitaker, as a daughter.
On May 27, 1776, James enlisted in the Revolutionary Army as a member of the Steadmans Company, where he served two and half years.
Prior to June 1, 1796, the state of North Carolina included all of what is now the state of Tennessee. In the files of North Carolina Land Grants, there is recorded only one Military Land Grant to James Harris for Revolutionary War Service, Private in Line of this State Davidson County, Tennessee 228 Acres dated March 7, 1796. There are five other land grants recorded for James Harris by purchase from the state.

1. John, the son of James and Hannah (Stapleton) Harris, went over into Rowan County and married the widow Ruth (Luckey) Cowan; July 30, 1795. Her father, Samuel Luckey, co-signed the marriage bond.

Know all men by these presents- That I Edward Stapleton of the State of North Carolina and County of Rowan having Taken into serious consideration the frailty of my nature through the Infirmity of Oald age, together with the Duty I ly under to Divide the Portion of my Estate unto such of My Children who through ye Divine Blessing will pay the most Dutiful Regard to me in my oald Age & seeing the unjustness of som of my former proceedings of makin over Unto my Son Joshua Stapleton now living in the province of Maryland the whole of my Estate by Deed of Gift, with out having the least Security for my Maintenance during Life, and being now full satisfied that I was then incapable of Settling my Affairs with Discretion through frailty of Nature indispositions of Body and unsoundness of mind; I Doe herein declare Said Deed of Gift to be unjust and to be void- Null and of no Effect, and being now fully capable of Settling my Estate in Such a manner as is most agreeable to my own mind and not injurious- to my Children, Doe of my own free will and accord give and grant the whole of my Estate in manner & form following, first of all I doe make over the one half of my Land goods and Chattles, including my improvement wherein I now live unto my Loving Son Joshua Stapleton to be his Whole & Entire Right from me for Ever. The Deed of Gift was made and signed 12 May 1780 and was duly proved and recorded in the August term of the Rowan County Court. It is therefore assumed that Edward Stapleton, Sr. died in Rowan Co., NC between May 12 and August 1780.
