News article in the Lititz (PA) Express, Friday, 26 Apr 1918. "AGED MAN A SUICIDE - Uriah Sourbeer, of Columbia, Walked into the Susquehanna - Uriah Sourbeer, an aged and well-known cititzen of Columbia, ended his life in a tragic manner Sunday. He drowned himself in the Susquehanna river. Mr. Sourbeer resided with his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Enger, Columbia, and Sunday morning he arose at the usual hour. He appeared to be in excellent spirits and ate a hearty breakfast. About 8:20 o'clock he left the house and called on a friend. Mr. Sourbeer later called upon his brother, Chas. P. Sourbeer, and after an exchange of greetings left the house. He evidently walked directly to the river, as was his custom, as he was an amateur fisherman and spent much time on or about the stream. He walked to a point below the site of the old canal, almost opposite the Detwiler quarry, known as the sand bar. Harry Seibert, of Washington Boro. noticed the man cross over the tracks of the low grade freight line and walk toward the river. The man's rather strange actions caused Mr. Seibert to continue his close watch on the man, and he was startled when the latter deliberately walked into the river and was swept away by the swift curent. Nothing could be done to save the man from drowning, as the water at that point is very deep and very swift. Mr. Seibert gave an alarm and later the family was notified. Mr. Sourbeer was in his 84th year, and was a resident of Columbia for many years. Until his retirement a number of years ago he was engineer in the pumping station of the Columbit [sic] Water Company. During the Civil War he served an enlistment in the 186th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and was a member of General Welsh Post, No. 118, G. A. R. He is survived by one son, Harry B. Sourbeer, of Harrisburg, and two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Enger, of Columbia, and Edith, wife of Isaac B. Feiser, of Philadelphia. One brother, Charles P. Sourbeer, of Columbia, and several grandchildren also survive." I am not related - obituary was on the same page of the newspaper as other obituaries.
