REFN: 10250 He left Washington College his junior year, due to his failing eyesight. He completed his education with private tutors. He was an antiquarian and botanist. He was a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. He published "Memoranda of the Effectsof Carburetted Hydrogen Gas on a Collection of Exotic Plants", in 1858. Inthat same year, "The Alarm Bell", an address to fireman, reached a circulation of 20,000 copies. He published a Centennial Memorial of Christian and AnnaMaria Wolff. From his father he inherited 1/2 million dollars. He bequeathed his library to the PA Historical Society. George and his daughter diedin the midnight collision near Warsaw, IN (on the Ohio River) between the steamers United States and America. They were on the United States, which burned, killing 66 people. His material for a Fahnestock Geneaolgy was lost.
