James Frederick FAHNESTOCK
REFN: 8481 After graduating from high school, he entered the employ of Peter Wright and Sons, general agents for the American Line of Steamships and the International Navigation Co. The INC operated the Red Star Line. In July, 1884, upon the acquisition of the Inman Line by the INC, Mr. Fahnestock inaugurated the voucher system for the company and was placed in charge of the adjustment of through freights between ocean carriers and the railroads. In January 1892, when the INC assumed full charge of its own affairs, he was made assistant treasurer at Philadelphia. In December 1902, upon the merger of thevarious steamship lines and the formation of the International Mercantile Marine Co., he was appointed assistant treasurer and moved to New York City. InOctober, 1907, upon the retirement of James S. Swartz, who had been treasurer of the INC, Mr. Fahnestock succeeded to Mr. Swartz's office as treasurer ofthe IMMC. On December 9, 1908, he was appointed assistant treasurer of the Pennsylvania Railroad Co., and assigned to duty at the NY office. March 23, 1909, he was elected treasurer of the PA RR Co., as successor to Henry Tatnall. Mr. Fahnestock is a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, ofthe Society of Colonial Wars, of the Orpheus and Merion Cricket Clubs, and the Racquet Club of Philadelphia.
