Nancy Ann Welcome and her son George Sylvester Welcome threw Julia down
the stairs for her money. One death certificate said cause of death was
dysentery but the attending doctor at the death said "this woman has been
beaten to death". Charges were never pressed. There was also speculation
that Nancy Ann killed her father-in-law George Washington Welcome. (

Julia raised Gladys and her two brothers after their Mother died. Gladys
was eight at the time.
