Occupation: A rich Indian Trader. Came from: Salisbury, England Settled about 1715 near the Susquehanna River, eight miles below George Stuart. He had land also on the opposite side of the river, where he pastured his horses, and it was through an attack upon these horses that what was called the Cresap's War was begun (Nov 26, 1732). Captain Cresap as a tenant and tool of Lord Baltimore of Maryland, who claimed land up to the Susquehanna river and 25 miles beyond. The was lasted severeal years and in its numerous skirmishes severeal men were killed. The Pennsylvania Irish (of whom Capt. Patterson was the leading "Spirit" - until his death) conquered at last, although Capt. Patterson lost his land on the west side of the river.

At the age of 20 was taken prisoner by Cresap. After his father's death he moved to Donegal Township, 4 miles above the Stuarts. In 1747, he sold out to Lazarus Lowrey, and bought 300 acres in what is now Lurgan Township, Franklin County. 4 Feb 1755 he got a warrant for 407 acres of land on the Juniata river, where Mexico now stands. Here he built a block house, called generally "Fort Patterson", but sometimes called "Pomfret Castle". On the opposite side of the river, his son William also built a fort. James Patterson was made a Captain of the militia very early and fought all through the French and Indian waes. He served under Col. Denny, Col. John Armstrong, Gen. Forbes and pershaps Gen. Braddock. He was also the chief leader in all local conflicts. He is called the "most illustriuos pioneer settler in Juniata County". See "History of Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys".
