                   Michael was summoned among a number of barons to a parley with the Kingon urgent matters. He was exempted from general summons for service inGascony, but was summoned for it later. In 1295/7 he was preparing forservice in Scotland, under Earl de Warrenne, and later in 1298,1300-06-10-13. In 1296 he was enrolled for defense of the coast; in 1297,having lands and rents valued at 20 and more a year in Sussex andSurrey, he had a double summons, both direct from the King and by theSheriff, for service overseas. In 1299 he went abroad with Henry dePercy. He and his wife were summoned to the coronation of Edward II,1307. He was member of Parliament for Sussex 1312-3. He married sometimebefore 8 June, 1298, Margery ..... He is probably to be identified withthe ..... Paynings killed at the Battle of Bannockburn 24 June, 1314. Hiswidow was living Feb. 1333/4. He had Thomas, his successor, Joan, and ayounger son, who was killed on Good Friday, 1347, when his sister Margerywas forcibly carried off from the manor of Beam, near Reading, by SirJohn Dalton.
