John de Segrave, 4th Lord (Baron) Segrave; born c1315; married by 15 Dec1338 Margaret, created 29 Sep 1397 Duchess of Norfolk for life and dejure Countess of Norfolk in her own right (married 2nd Walter, Lord(Baron) Mauny, and dspm 24 March 1398/9, when the Duchy expired but theEarldom of Norfolk passed to her grandson 7th Lord (Baron) Mowbray),daughter and eventually sole heiress of Thomas of Brotherton, Earl ofNorfolk, 5th son of Edward I, and dspm 1 April 1353. This nobleman appears, like his predecessors,a distinguished personage in the field during his short career, for hedid not live beyond the age of thirty-eight. In the wars of France andScotland, temp. Edward III, he took an active part and was more than onceretained to serve the king by indenture. His lordship made an illustriousalliance in marrying the Lady Margaret Plantagenet, dau., and eventuallysole heiress, of Thomas de Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, Marshal ofEngland, younger son of King Edward I; by this lady he left, at hisdecease in 1353, an only dau. and heiress, Elizabeth.
