Ethelwulf, King of WESSEX
Alfred was the only king in British history to be called "the Great." He fought the ever invading Vikings, but then made peace and gave them lands, so that the English and Vikings settled down to live together. He invented new and faster ships for his navy. He reorganized his army in two shifts, one at home and one "out," who would periodically change places, so he always had a fresh army in case of invasion. He goverened with fairness and justice, and enacted new laws that reflected same. He did all in his power to educate his people, building schools and bringing in scholars to teach, and to translate texts from Latin into English. He built fortified towns (buhrs) for the protection of his people. Alfred was troubled with health problems throughout his life.
