Frank LeRoy Shafer, 92, passed away on May 10, 2008, after a long illness. He was born on February 4, 1916, in Salt Lake City, Utah to parents Clyde F. Shafer and Vera Davis. He married Mildred Gattiker in Carson City, Nevada on May 16, 1937 and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sacramento, California when he was eleven years of age and remained an active member all his life. He served as the Area Welfare Director for the Southeastern United States, in several stake presidencies, on several High Councils and twice as a Bishop. He served as a missionary from 1938 to 1940 beginning in the Southern States Mission and transferring to the California Mission. He and his wife, Mildred, served several welfare missions from 1981 through 1989. Frank Served in the European Theater during World War II from the beginning of 1943 to the end of 1945. After his release from the US Army, he began a very successful 40 year career with the International Harvester Company. Frank enjoyed many interests including woodworking, remodeling, eating ice cream and working with the Boy Scouts of America. As an Eagle Scout his heart was in scouting. After a lifetime of service he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. He is survived by his wife of almost 71 years, Mildred, his children, Patricia Olson (James), Peggy Robinson (Kenneth), Penny Frandsen (Wayne), F. Lee Shafer (Julie) and Judith Erkman (Brent), 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, grandson Jared Erkman, and his brother, Donald Shafer. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at 11:00 AM in the Edgemont Second Ward, 55 East 3230 North, Provo, UT. There will be a viewing prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State, Provo, UT. The family would like to express their profound appreciation to A Plus Hospice, Marleen, Heidi, Jenny, Sheila, Jason and all others for their loving and dedicated service.
