Charles Campbell was born in Northern Ireland, probably in Co. Tyrone, married there and came to America in about 1719 with his parents, wife, one son and his younger siblings. They arrived initially at Boston, but likely stayed there only briefly before removing to New London, CT and then to the area of what became Voluntown, CT near Stonington, possibly in Montville.Little is known about Charles and his family. "The Robert Campbell Genealogy," Rev. Frederic Campbell, 1909, contains little detail, listing only 6 children and no daughters. In William Richard Cutter, New England Families Genealogical & Memorial, Third Series, Vol. II, (Orig. publ. NY, 1915; repr. by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1997), pg. 935, Charles is noted as having had a "pew spot" assigned to him at Voluntown in 1732 (along with brother John).According to The Havey Book, pg. 394:"He [Charles Campbell] was one of the seven original members of the first Church organized in the North Parish of New London in October, 1722. In April, 1724, he sold to John Dixson his half-interest in the Mohegan lands which he and Dixson had previously purchased, and removed to Voluntown, Connecticut, where John Campbell--either his brother or his son--was then residing. "1 Jan., 1726, Charles Campbell was chosen one of the ruling elders of the Church in Voluntown. In 1747 he was a member of the committee appointed to divide the common lands of Voluntown, re-bound the old lots, etc. In 1760 he was again chosen one of the elders of the Church. During the years 1742 to 1745, inclusive, he was one of the Deputies from Voluntown to the General Assembly of Connecticut."
NOTE: John Campbell was the first practising physician in Voluntown, CT. His will is dated 26 June 1773 and he is alleged to have died the folowing winter.
NOTE: According to "Genealogy of the Desc. of the John Thomas of New Haven," Robert Campbell, Jr was born about 1709; this agrees with the article "William Rogers of Voluntown, CT...," NEHGS "Register," Vol 147, pg. 115. A specific date of birth of 23 April 1709 is given in "Robert Campbell Genealogy," Rev. Frederic Campbell, 1909, pg. 50, copied from notes written by Rev. Campbell himself in a pocket bible. Robert was among those who split from Rev. Dorrance's church in Voluntown in a schism in 1745; he joined the Congregational Church in Plainfield, CT from which he was received into membership in the Church of Christ at Canaan, Litchfield Co., CT in 1760. This Canaan church moved to Stillwater, NY in April, 1762. Prior to the move, Robert had been called as pastor 13 Jan. 1761 and ordained 20 Oct. 1761. ("William Rogers of Voluntown, CT...," NEHGS "Register," Vol 147, pg. 115.) Also see History of Saratoga County, New York, by Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester, 1878, Chapter 33, Stillwater, Part 2, posted online at: [http://www.rootsweb.com/~nysarato/Sylvester/chap33.html]. According to The History of the Town of Stillwater, it became known as the Congregational Church of Stillwater and the Yellow Meeting House of Stillwater and Rev. Robert is buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church.
