NOTES: Thomas was a revolutionay war soldier. He enlisted in his 17th year under General McDowel and fought under George Washington. Thomas Downs was a pensioner and his papers are on file in the National Archives at Washington, D. C.
HISTORY Historical information included in notes. From "Our Pioneer Heritage, Volume 14" - Christian Christianson Handcart Company - From the Warren Foote Diary: September, 1848, Father Myers, in company with Ezekiel Downs and Absalom Smith built a gristmill on Mosquito Creek about eight miles from Kanesville, in Winter Quarters. Franklin and I rented it until the first of April. The grinding was slow and we worked day and night. Ezekiel Downs was a bodyguard of the Prophet Joseph Smith. After the Prophet was shot at Carthage Jail, Ezekiel said "This is the end" and he left the Mormon Church. He remained in Iowa with his son Asa, while his wife, Charlotte and her three daughters and son James went on to Utah with a band of pioneers. (General content from Maud B. Allen book Absalom W.
