1. From notes received from Donna Ripley on 27 Jan, 1999 comes the following: James Barge, son of John and Pheobe was baptised 24 Oct 1819 at Weeden and Floore in Northampton. He married Amelia Russell on 30 September 1838 at Long Buckby, Northampton, England. He moved about the country until abt 1852 when he emigrated to Canada. Children Mary Ann, Jack, Alfred and Henrietta were all born in England. Notes from the family say that James was a lumbering and railway contractor and came to Canada in 1849. He leased lot 1 in the town of Mitchell, [C]ounty of Perth, in Canada West (now Ontario) in Nov of 1853. In the 1861 census, he lists himself as a carpenter and builder who came from England. James was the enumerator for the 1861 census and also for the 1871 census. In 1871 he lists himself as a hotelkeeper. Before 1880, James and his family moved to Detroit. He is listed in the Detroit [C]ity directory in 1881 living at 262 First Street. In 1884 James lists himself as a cabinet maker. In 1995, this area is now the beginning of the Detroit-Windsor tunnel in the heart of Detroit. In 1894, he moved back to Windsor. The Archives of Ontario state[s] that James died 21 Mar 1903 of pneumonia. James is buried with his wife and some of his children and grandchildren in Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit. His wife Amelia had died in Detroit on 10 Dec. 1881.
NOTE: Living with parents at time of 1861 census. 1. According to Donna Ripley (letter received 27 Jan. 1999) Mary Ann Barge the eldest child of James and Amelia was born 27 July 1840 in Northampton. She came to Canada with her parents and siblings about 1850. She married William John Hemsley 7 Aug 1860. Mary Ann and John had two girls, but John died about 1862 leaving Mary Ann with one daughter and a second on the way. When Emily was born, she was adopted by a Mitchell village family named Plum. The Plums subsequently moved to the United States. Mary Ann's first daughter Alma Mary was fostered to different families while her mother worked as a seamstress, nurse, and teacher. In 1875, Mary took her daughter to Toronto. Mary Ann worked at the Toronto Hospital and her daughter soon followed suit. Mary Ann married John Beck about 1900. She was in charge of a day care centre (called a creche at that time). Mary Ann died 21 Oct. 1921 and is buried in St. John's Norway Cemetery with her daughter and some of Alma Mary's children.
NAME: Etta NOTE: Never married 1. According to Donna Ripley (27 Jan. 1999) Henrietta Barge was born 6 Dec. 1843 in Northampton. She never married. She kept house for her father and later for her brother Alfred. She was also a seamstress. She died 3 Apr. 1926in Windsor, Ontario and is buried with her parents in Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit.
1. According to Donna Ripley (27 Jan 1999 letter) John F. W. Ruyssell Barge was born May 1846 in England. He was often called Jack. He came with his family to Canada west about 1850. Jack later moved to Cleveland about 1868. In 1872 he formed a company with M.M. Udell in photography. He continued this relationship for several years and then in 1890 is listed as a salesman for Barge and Gross. He retired in 1904. He married Cornelia, but had no children of his own.
NOTE: No children found. 1. According to Donna Ripley (27 Jan 1999 letter) Alfred James Russell Barge was born 14 July 1848 in Kenton, Rutland in England. He came to Canada with his parents and siblings about 1850. In 1867, he went to Cleveland as a salesman. He later had a plate glass factory that also sold sheet glass and ornamental glass on Seneca Street in Cleveland. He married but his wife and child died. He sold the plate glass business and retired to Windsor in 1901. He died 13 Feb 1936 and is buried in Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit.
1. According to Donna Ripley (letter written 27 Jan 1999) Julia Matilda Russell Barge was born 6 Mar 1852 in Canada West, likely in the town of Mitchell. She moved to Detroit with her parents and did some dressmaking there. She married Nicholas Huff in Detroit. They had several children, but after Nicholas died, she came back to Windsor. She died 19 Mar 1940 and is buried with her husband in Woodmere, Cemetery in Detroit.
1. According to Donna Ripley (letter written 27 Jan. 1999) Frank Herbert Russell Barge--Frank was born in 1853 in Perth County of Canada West. He never married and lived with his parents in Detroit. He died 3 Sep. 1919 in Eloise, Wayne County, Michigan and is buried in Woodmere Cemetery with his parents and siblings.
NOTE: No marriage found 1. According to Donna Ripley (letter written 27 Jan 1999) George Henry Barge was born 1862 in Mitchell, Perth. He moved with his family to Detroit where he was a clerk and bookkeeper. He lived with his parents. He died 6 Feb 1891 in Detroit and is buried in Woodmere Cemetery.
He married Amelia Russell 30 Sep 1838 at Long Buckby, Northampton, England . Amelia Russell was born at Long Buckby, Northampton, England 1820 .
