James Barge, son of John and Pheobe was baptised 24 Oct 1819 at Weeden and Floore in Northampton. He married Amelia Russell on 30 September 1838 at Long Buckby, Northampton, England. He moved about the country until abt 1852 when he emigrated to Canada. Children Mary Ann, Jack, Alfred and Henrietta were all born in England. Notes from the family say that James was a lumbering and railway contractor and came to Canada in 1849. He leased lot 1 in the town of Mitchell, [C]ounty of Perth, in Canada West (now Ontario) in Nov of 1853. In the 1861 census, he lists himself as a carpenter and builder who came from England. James was the enumerator for the 1861 census and also for the 1871 census. In 1871 he lists himself as a hotelkeeper.

Before 1880, James and his family moved to Detroit. He is listed in the Detroit [C]ity directory in 1881 living at 262 First Street. In 1884 James lists himself as a cabinet maker. In 1995, this area is now the beginning of the Detroit-Windsor tunnel in the heart of Detroit. In 1894, he moved back to Windsor.

The Archives of Ontario state[s] that James died 21 Mar 1903 of pneumonia. James is buried with his wife and some of his children and grandchildren in Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit. His wife Amelia had died in Detroit on 10 Dec. 1881.
