Gabriel MAUPIN

                   NOTE:
      There is circumstantial evidence that the Maupin and Via families were Huguenots - French Protestants who were followers of the "Reformed Chuch" established by John Calvin in 1550. The initial French Huguenot immigration to the Colonies generally occurred between 1618 and 1725, as they first fled persecution in France to other European countries, then migrated to other places, with history citing that only about 5,000 to 7,000 reached the British colonies. Records show that Gabriel Maupin married Marie Hersent in 1691 in the Netherlands (Holland) and their first three children were born there - Daniel was the first born in the Colonies (Virginia) circa 1700.
      It has often been related in the family that the emigrant, Gabriel Maupin, senior, was a very devout religious man, and that when coming over the sea the ship sprang a leak, and the passengers became alarmed, and thought they would go down and be lost, and Mr. Maupin was called upon to pray. Whereupon he offered up a fervent and effectual prayer to the Most High, and the leak stopped, and when the vessel arrived at the American port, an examination of same was made, when it was discovered that the stoppage of the leak was caused by a large fish insome miraculous and mysterious way becoming tightly wedged in the crack.

Parents of Gabriel were Amos Maupin b. abt. 1625 of Pyrennes, Gargon, Frances & Marguerite Capet b. abt. 1631 Basses-Pyreness, FrancesMilitary officer of the Army of Navarre Commandment Royal Arsenal of Williamsburg.
