Robert Stephen RICH
Biography in book at Texas State Archives (I do not know the name of the book): R.S. Rich, House Enrolling Clerk, was born in Fayette county, Tenn., October 25, 1845; was principally reared and educated in Louisiana; served in the Confederate army, first for six months as a soldier in Company D, Harrison's Louisiana Cavalry, and afterwards in the quartermaster's department at Shreveport, LA., until the close of hostilities; moved to Kaufman, Kaufman county, Texas, in october 1867; served as deputy sheriff in 1869-70; deputy district and county clerk in 1871-2; farmed and ran a blacksmith shop in connection therewith for about five years; later returned to the town of Kaufman; resided there until 1809, and then moved to De Leon, Comanche county, which has since been his home. He was married October 25, 1865, in Claiborne parish, LA., to Miss M.C. Black, daughter of Captain T.M. Black, a prominent citizen of that portion of Louisiana, and has seven living children, viz: John R., at Jacksboro; Luella, now Mrs. P.H. Miller, at Gorman, and Josiah, Robert T., Henry, Erie Jane, and William H. living at home with their parents. Two children, Bennie and Edwin B., are deceased. Mr. Rich is now engaged in farming. He is a member of the Baptist church, Masonic, and Knights of Pythias fraternities and Democratic party. He has attended as a delegate, or otherwise, nearly every Democratic state convention in Texas during the past fifteen years and for the ten years has contributed largely to the press in defense of Democratic principles, policies and nominees. He was at one time editor and proprietor of the Kaufman Review and adds the graces of a good writer to his accomplishments as a good farmer, mechanic, court clerk and Legislative enrolling clerk. He was elected and served as Enrolling Clerk of the House of Representatives of the Twenty second, Twenty third and Twenty-fourth Legislatures and was again honored with the position on the assembling of the Twenty-fifth Legislature. His repeated re-election to this important office has been due to the fact that it is absolutely necessary to select a man for it who has had previous experience with the work and has demonstrated his competency by actual trial. An Enrolling Clerk should be a careful man not given to making errors, an honest man, a man who knows how to dispatch the work rapidly (for there is always a rush at the close of a session and a slow-coach would delay adjournment, sine die, for weeks after the two houses were through with their business) and, in this state, a Democrat with no prefixes or suffixes to his Democracy. Such a man is Robert D. Rich, behond doubt the most thoroughly competent Enrolling Clerk who has served the House in recent years and who certainly has no superior in his line in Texas. 1860 Census Claiborne Parish, LA 1870,1880 Census Kaufman Co, TX 1900 Census Comanche Co, TX. 23-34-7-25 Robert S.
