Cassil, a farmer and carpenter of Linn Township, Moniteau County, is a native of New Lisbon, Columbiana Co., Ohio, and was born in 1833. He is a son of John R. and Christina (Welday) Cassil. John R. was born in Eastern Kentucky, July 15, 1802; his father died when he was small, and his mother afterward married Phillip Ward and moved to Ohio. John R. Cassil was a contractor and builder by trade, and when grown he went to Ohio, where he also engaged in cabinet-making and millwrighting. April 15, 1824, he was married in Steubenville, Ohio, where he remained ten or twelve years, and then removed to Carrolton, Carroll Co., Ohio. He subsequently lived in a farm in the northern part of Williams county about five years, and then with his family located in St. Joseph, Mo., later settling about 60 miles south of that place. In the latter part of the year 1854 he went to Kickapoo, where he followed millwriting, and from there went with a party to Pike's Peak, where he was supposed to have been killed, as he has never since been heard from. He was a member of the Methodist Episcoplal Church. His wife, who was a daughter of Jacob Welday, of Pennsylvania, was born in Ohio, March 12, 1807, and still survives. They had eleven children, eight of whom are now living, viz.: Catherine, in Ohio; Margaret and William, in Kansas; Phillip W., in Missouri; Rebecca J., John and Rose Ellen, also in Kansas; and Hannah Partee, living in Washington Territory. The deceased are: Elizabeth M., who died in childhood in 1830; Francis was killed in 1875; Sarah Ann died in Wyandotte, Kan., in 1884, leaving two children. Phillip W. Cassil received a good common-school education, and subsequently taught school twenty-two terms. He learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed quite extensively, and since locating in Missouri has erected several buildings and one school house. He went to Missouri from Ohio in 1874, and settled on his present farm of 160 acres in Linn Township, upon which he erected good buildings and made improvements. September 22, 1856, he married Louisa Partee, who was born in Defiance County, Ohio, November 1, 1835, and is a daughter of Lawrence and Rebecca (Webb) Partee. Twelve children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Cassil, viz.: Leslie, who was born in 1857, was married in Ohio December 7, 1882, and died in Kansas City November 19, 1887; Bruce, born January 22, 1859, in Henry County, Ohio, married Rachel Vivion September 9, 1880, is now living in Kansas City, Mo., and has three children; H. Rebecca, wife of C. Chiles, married September 9, 1880, has three children and lives in Kansas City; Elias was born July 16, 1862, and is a journeyman; Willis born November 21, 1864, carpenter; Fanny was born July 18, 1866, and was married in March 1887, to M. G. Turner; Frank was born April 27, 1870; Elmar born September 23, 1872; John born June 6, 1875; Charles November 1, 1877; and Grace April 15, 1880. The parents are active members of the Methodist church and take a prominent part in church and Sunday-school work. In politics Mr. Cassil is independent."
